Update. Adding a graphics card (Nvidia GeForce GT610) stops the crashing. Unfortunately this card, a cheapie one off Ebay, doesn't do video decoding so video playback is actually worse as the Intel onboard GPU was handling it before. After a bit more research it seems Intel stopped supporting...
