I have said this before. I am not a zealot. I am not a Linux zealot. At the end of the day, I use Linux because I prefer it. I don't care all that much about the software licenses I use. I use proprietary software - and so do you. You're using proprietary software right now.

Anyhow, it is my opinion that there are perfectly legitimate reasons why you might not want to use Linux. Those reasons are legitimate and those people should continue using the OS they're currently working with. You don't have to use Linux to accomplish your computational goals.

Don't get me wrong. I obviously love Linux. I put more effort into Linux than most folks. It's the greatest OS I can use because it suits me. It also matters that I have a Unix background. So, Linux is a great choice - for me.

I'm not sure how to open this up for discussion without offending anyone. Thank you for taking the time to write the article. I suppose if I were to provide any constructive criticism (which one is subject too if they blog to the internet ofc) I would first have to inquire.

How much gaming do you actually do and how much experience do you have gaming on Linux? I found that portion of the article entirely unrelatable and I can honestly say it literally made me lol reading that Linux gaming support is subpar. I think off the top of my head, there are maybe 2-3 games out of my 250+ steam library that don't actually launch just using the default proton.

I could relate to the fact that someone may be tied to Windows for use of proprietary softwares that aren't available natively on Linux, and I could relate to if someone had investments in Microsoft that kept them bound. But pretty much everything else either felt like expression of common unspoken knowledge, or a bit of a reach. I by no mean's say this to be disrespectful, merely expressing my first impressions.

Overall the article was well formatted.

I don't have any issue with your blog. I just don't like blogs in general in regards to this sort of thing because more often than not it feels like people are just trying to write for the sake of writing rather than writing for the sake of educating. Which leads to a bunch of confusion or misinformation that is near impossible to diffuse once the match of misunderstanding's been lit.

That's why we have 10,000,000 "What is the best Linux Distro of insert year here" all of which are generally bias nonsense with little to no actual substial knowledge or source to support the claims.

Ugh, I apologize. As I write I think more about blogs and I'm just getting irritated. I apologize if I offended you. The article was well written.

I don't know how to socialize. I kant comoonicate with hoomanz

I apologize if I offended you.

It's all good. I'm not easily offended.

Reason #12: you can't install it on your vcr.

Hmm... Someone has to have installed Linux on a VCR by now.

With today's 'smart devices', you could really have a toaster that runs Linux. (There are some pretty fancy toasters at outlandish prices.)

I bought a VCR not too long ago and a bunch of tapes just cuz nostalgia, and had fun watching videos for a month. Then I was like "these take up so much more space than DVDs and blueray do...", so i gave away the tapes and sold the VCR on ebay. I will always appreciate the crappy VHS look to movies etc. but it just isn't worth the dedication IMO.

As far as the rest of the debate, over the years I have actually found that I just don't even have an excuse to switch from linux to anything else as my main operating system. I have a Windows 11 mini PC just to test and compare things, and the bluetooth is nicer because it's totally automatic (i don't need to manually connect), but there's honestly hardly anything else i like about Windows compared to linux. I definetly agree witht your article (any reason you can think of, use that unless you are wrong :p), but needing windows instead of linux is more or less a niche proprietary software things, like "i need windows for the microsoft word suite", or, "i need windows for wavelabs", etc.

I actually "need" to buy a laptop for Windows use. I have some music gear that can only be "properly" controlled with Windows or a Mac. Of course, I've had the gear for a couple of years and still haven't picked up said laptop. I can control the device on a tiny LED and have done that for the duration. If I had Windows I could connect to it and enable a bunch more options, as well as update the firmware.

Ah well... It's a USB connection so not even Windows in a VM appears to work properly.

I have about $1500 in GoPro equipment that just gathers dust because I refuse to install windows back on the laptop (the reason I bought the laptop) lol. I just got really tired of this nice laptop sitting on a shelf gathering dust with the cameras because I used the cameras so infrequently lol.

So i installed Arch and have been enjoying the laptop ever since. I literally bought this dang thing for like $1200 and edited about 60 videos and then it just sat after that because I'd quit recording 360 footage on the Max. Had no other use for the laptop until I decided to just cut my losses and install Arch. Now I'm using the Laptop pretty much every waking moment I'm away from the Host PC lol.
