Moving an image from one machine to another to boot off it

I made an image of an installed OS on one machine, then tried to boot off that image (On an external 2.5" SSD Samsung T9). I did not really expect it to work and I got the dracut prompt /dev/rhel/root does not exist and so on. Entering emergency mode. Is that due to the differences in...

Why doesn't the dd command produce a bootable clone disk?

I do not fully get it. dd is supposed to completely clone a disk, bit-by-bit. Yet I could never get it to create a bootable clone and had to resort to apps like Clonezilla, etc. It runs, completes, but the target disk is not a bootable device. Seems like it's missing the bootloader or the...

    Cloning an SSD

I got a server with two identical SSDs, one has a good install of RHEL, other one does not. They are M.2 PCIe/NVMe. The problem is that when I boot into Clonezilla, I do not know which device file correlates to which physical location. They are identical. does p0 mean it's my source and p1 my...

    Issues tethering a device

The server got no wifi card so I tethered a device. It is found hardware-wise and configured as a wired device but no wifi networks appear. lspci/lsub and stuff all show it. Just tried everything I could for two hours to no avail. The wpa scan shows no networks. After starting the service with...

Factors affecting decryption speed: SSD, CPU and RAM

I got an identical version of VeraCrypt installed on 3 differently configured machines (hardware-wise). The OS is identical in all 3 cases, identically configured (all clones). 1. i7-6820hq with 32GB of RAM and Samsung 2TB 980Pro SSD 2. i7-10750H with 32GB of RAM and Samsung 2TB 970 Pro 3...

    Asperger's syndrome helps in IT

I got a friend whose husband has it. He is extremely meticulous, tidy, procedural, explicit, linguistically precise. Yet sometimes - often - he gets things wrong due to his aspie/autism. Here is an example. She sends him a list of groceries to buy for dinner. He goes shopping and gets...

XFCE in Xubuntu 24.04 with virtual desktops switcher

I got the multiple virtual desktop thing, it's nice. The switcher. Control-> moves to the right one. I find it much more user friendly versus packing everything in one window. I forgot if it's a built-in XFCE function or I had to install some 'aftermarket' package, since I've done so much to...

    Dell 7750 and 7720

Installed Xubuntu 24.04 on them, everything seems fine, except a few usual configuration annoyances. 7750 takes 4 PCIe 2280 SSDs so it could theoretically be a 4-way boot. 7720 has 2 PCIE/NVME 2280's and one 2.5" SATAIII. I can't believe how nice the 4K screen it, even at 175%.

Disabling touchpad when mouse is connected Xubuntu 24

I see there is a gazillion threads about this on the main Ubuntu forum and elsewhere so it must be an issue. I tried a couple of solutions, all to no avail. My touchpad is hypersensitive on 7750 I got although it runs Xubuntu 24 pretty nice. So does 7720. Is there a definitive fix for this issue?

Dell 7570 - bootable disk nvme vs SATAIII

I could not get the 7570 to boot off the 2.5" SATA III disk no matter what I did, no matter which OS I threw on it. Then I recalled I had the same issue with the SATAIII 2.5" SSD in my MSI. I wonder if some machines just don't boot off of it. 7570 had dual disks, the 2280 NVME slot and the 2.5...

RHEL 8 hangs during boot decrypting

I installed RHEL 8.9, server with graphics. LVM and Encryption turned on. Standard filesystem layout (did not go with custom). Everything seemed fine, the system was usable. I rebooted the system. When I enter decryption password, it does not proceed any further, hangs at decryption, spinning...

    Clonezilla rules

I cloned a windows 10 SSD today. It worked. The remarkable thing is, it was encrypted but it correctly copied the entire thing. I used to use this windows tool called Macrium Reflect. which kind of worked but post clone I had to adjust the bootloader settings as they got screwed up. Clonezilla...

Secure messengers - Signal and Telegram

Why? Because if you travel, a regular text SMS message involves charges and if you are in an area with poor reception, it may not even get there. Enter Telegram and or Signal. They work off wifi/network, can make fully encrypted voice and video calls, messages have set time-outs (self-deletes)...

Your Linux backup and disaster recovery solution

I run some mission critical stuff (to me, anyway) and I once (almost) had to deal with data loss so I take data integrity and availability very seriously. This is my backup and disaster recovery solution. It's not pretty but has worked for me for a number of years. I run a box with several...

VeraCrypt encryption for containers in Linux

I got the main system disk encrypted with Ubuntu built-in encryption. The thing that you enable during install. Now I created my main partition to be 1TB out of 2TB SSD and the remaining space I want to dedicate to a volume/container which is going to be non-boot partition. I want to encrypt...

    Linux full disc encryption

I am running xubuntu but this is really applicable for any distro as they likely use the same underlying mechanism. I encrypted all my hardware for security purposes, but now I am wondering about the under-the-hood implementation, what algorithms do they use, how big is the key size, has it been...

External monitor does not stay on if the lid is closed. Xubuntu 22.04

Not sure if I should post this in the hardware department, or the notebook sub-forum. I can't find the right setting, apparently it doesn't have the windows-equivalent of "what to do if the lid is closed" I run this NEC external monitor via DP to mni-DP cable, when I close the laptop lid, the...

    Moving from UNIX to Linux

I have been a UNIX sysadmin for a long time and transitioned to Linux admin in the last decade or so. I can't say I have been thrilled with it. I've always thought of UNIX as the real thing and of Linux as a cheap aftermarket imitation, mainly cost-driven. But "Real" Unix is very slow and very...

    Rocky Linux install and encryption

I am gonna go on a limb here and assume that during install of Rocky there is an option to encrypt the main partition? A la Redhat or Buntu? I don't mean the bootloader, I already did that with something else. Because if not, it is a deal-breaker.

My story how I crashed a Linux server

"crashed" as in hosed, wiped out, bricked, many unbootable. It was RHEL and using LVM2. So I wanted to clone the root volume group to an external 2TB SSD. For the purpose of a backup or really RAID-1. I wanted to completely replicate the rhel volume group and then remove the cloned ssd VG from...
