As the title suggests I have lurked for some time with regards to linux.
Then my Dell XPS died (haven't replaced the PSU yet), and after getting my wife a new laptop I got the in-laws old pc when they got laptops so this is where linux comes in. Old PC has XP on it and with the support clock on XP ticking away I wanted to see what else is out there.
This pc is a dell 2400, Pent. 4 with 768MB Ram. I must have burned some 30 distros using Distrowatch as a guide (I at least got one distro to see Ubuntu/Debian, Gentoo, Fedora, Slackware, Puppy, Arch, openSUSE and a couple others).
I use a Ralink USB wireless adapter so I needed a distro that wouldn't require much setup here.
Along the way here is what I found- Not sure if its the Debian/Ubuntu interface but the bloat I experienced didn't want me to switch from XP. Also, with what I had to work with any distro that used KDE was a non-player. So anything GNOME-based or KDE was out either on appearance or hardware constraints.
So what it came down to was SilTaz, Bridge Arch XFCE, ArtistX (this is based on Ubuntu but I really liked all the A/V software), Papug, MacPup (really like the Enlightenment interface) and Puppy Slacko.
Puppy Slacko won out since it picked up the wireless right away and ran fast being it runs in the RAM. Bridge Arch was really nice too but since Slacko (also like the fact its based on Slackware) picked up the wireless I really like that. I may end up trying to make a puppy version with Arch but haven't gotten to that yet.
This was a lengthy intro I know but I just wanted to describe what brought me to Linux - especially Puppy. Plus the fact I either run it from my hard drive, off the CD ROM, or my USB sold me too.
