I think it honestly depends on the games OP plays. There are a lot of games that will work just fine out of the box on Linux through Steam with Valve's Proton.
I would recommend OP check out https://www.protondb.com/ and https://areweanticheatyet.com/ to see if the games OP wants to play are...
Personally, I always recommend starting with Ubuntu. It's the most popular Linux distro, it's very beginner friendly, and you get the benefits of more community support if you run into issues since it's the most popular Linux distro.
Of course, you could always go with a Ubuntu-based distro...
You may need to run sudo update-alternatives --config javac and sudo update-alternatives --config java to update the default version of Java being used.
You also may need to set your JAVA_HOME in your .bashrc or .zshrc or whatever rc file for whatever shell you use, like this...

This was taken on my old PC, but I still think it's pretty cool.
To me, it sounds like you're saying it takes several minutes to load into games? That's not normal when you have an SSD.
I would suggest to start with a benchmark and see what kind of performance you're seeing, that way you can at least rule out a potential hardware issue.
