not sure I get your question 100% but there are a few linux'es you might be able to install on your router.

my best suggestion is to leave your router alone and attach a raspberry pi with a network cable and add a big wifi-usb stick to it and install pfsense or openwrt on said raspi. that gives for the most secure and easy to install option.
