Question on practice test

I may be overthinking this. I am currently in hardware tech class for computer science at college. This one question is throwing me off.

I am going to attach the photo of it. I already answered according to the A+ book but why is it not

Yum install httpd -dep??????

The command :

yum install httpd -dep

The reason why you would not run this is because the '-dep' is for dependencies.

Dependencies should be handled and installed first before installing Apache server.

Thank you! That makes total sense! I had asked the teacher but he dismissed me as usual. I’m just now looking up commands and the reasons behind the commands now. At least I only have to deal with this teacher for another 3 weeks. He doesn’t believe women should be in tech. Snorts laughing. If you know of any books or websites let me know! I’m searching the databases now.

I'd be interested in what the director of the school or college has to say regarding the teacher they hired and his conduct in reference to what he spoke of.

you are correct however the "yum" at least in fedora has been depreciated and no longer used since about version 29. The correct would be dnf install httpd

the YUM is replaced by DNF in current Fedora and redhat, Your teacher may be several years out of date.

Yes, I wanted to know the why and how behind the commands on the CompTIA A+ exam. I also was questioning how accurate is this in real world application instead of teaching the test. I’m one of those students…..most hate me for that. That’s why I tend to just keep to myself and look it up or ask on dedicated forums if there are any.

I am chatting with someone in the disability office and the student affairs office along with the computer science dean. There’s no reason for that teacher to come across like that. Well, in a perfect world but at the same time this is right either. J

I used dnf back when Fedora was on my laptop. That's was a handful of years ago.

Glad I spoke up. He is an assistant professor and I have been transferred into another class. No idea what will happen to him after this but the professor I have been transferred to is good so far. Will see how it goes as the class progresses.

At Red Hat, they mention the following:

In Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 9, use the DNF utility to manage software. For compatibility reasons with previous major RHEL versions, you can still use the yum command. However, in RHEL 9, yum is an alias for dnf which provides a certain level of compatibility with yum.
Note

Although RHEL 8 and RHEL 9 are based on DNF, they are compatible with YUM used in RHEL 7.

Old timers, perhaps , who were used to typing yum under the fingers, may still use it, but it's clearly no disadvantage in relation to exercising the facilities of dnf if the yum command is aliased. Can't say if other rpm based distros have a similar approach.

The approach is the same however in essence they linked yum to dnf so it changes yum to dnf for you but at some point in the near future that will stop working. Best to be up to date. so the professor's "yum" lesson still works but also still not current by years.
