I'm using a Windows 10 workstation with Putty and Xming to open X window apps locally against a Red Hat 7.3 server. When I SSH in as my primary/non-privileged user account, and launch an X app, it comes up on my workstation without issue. But if I su to a more privileged user and try the same it results in an error: "can't open display".

I found that my initial SSH login has the $DISPLAY variable automatically set. But for my su session $DISPLAY is not defined. Next I did an export DISPLAY = to the same value as my initial user. Now I receive a different error message: "PuTTY X11 proxy: Unsupported authorization protocol Error: Can't open display:server_IP:10.0".

Please advise. On the Red Hat side I didn't (knowingly) configure any specific settings for my primary user as it relates to X access. On the Windows side, the configuration within Putty and Xming doesn't appear to be user specific.
