Will this graphics card "Fit" ??

I am looking at this card...

....I have an asrock B150M Pro4 motherboard.

I can see a pci express 3.0 slot on the motherboard.

Seeing I know screw all about this type of thing...can someone much better versed/experienced than myself tell me if this going to be compatible, both with the motherboard and with the pci express 3.0 slot

I am only installing this to sharpen up the display a little......not for gaming etc
I have noticed 'screen tearing' when I scroll quite slowly down a page....usually of print...as I am reading.

Screen tearing (to me) is a 'wiggly' line across the screen which "tears" the printed page apart for just a brief part of a second...

The price of the linked item above is quite good and I do not expect it last very long.....

My best guess is: Yes, I think it will fit. (Remember, that is ONLY a guess.) The PCIe cards and slots are backward compatible, from what I can find, so the 2.0 card should fit the 3.0 slot. Ebay doesn't give dimensions, but this link shows the card as 7.32" x 5" x 1.42". I'd suggest taking a good look inside to make sure about the space requirements and that the onboard fan will fit too. Again, I would guess that it will work for you.

So....if it wont fit in the top slot...it will definitely fit in the lower slot.

Yes, it looks like you have two slots that are PCIe (x16) that can accept a graphics card. Another thing to check out is your power supply... your 1st choice requires a minimum of a 400W supply, and the others need at least a 300W supply.

This link is a fairly nice checklist of things to consider. The article also mentions that if your computer is an OEM model like Dell, HP, Acer, etc, that it is possible that the motherboard could be customized such that an off-the-shelf video card would not work and would require you to purchase one from the OEM. I have not run into a situation like that in a long time, but apparently it is still possible (Dell used to be notorious for this). If you built the computer yourself then this isn't an issue.

It wouldn't hurt to Google around a little for each model you are considering and see if there are any reviews to help you choose between them, especially from Linux users. It looks like they would all work okay, and whichever you choose I hope that it cures the screen tearing issue for you.

Looking at your motherboard specs, you have 4 expansion slots. 2 are PCIE x16, those are the long ones, and the two middle ones are PCIE x1.

The video board that you first indicated is a double width card, because the fan sticks out on the side facing the bottom of the case, (I'm assuming a tower case here) and the manufacturer claims that it uses 65 watts.

I don't know how much unused capacity you have on your current power supply, because I don't know what your configuration is, so I can't tell you if you need to upgrade the power supply also.

If it was me doing this, I would put the video card in the bottom slot, because you may want to use the two middle slots in the future, and if it was inserted in the top slot it would block one of them. Hope his helps.

Is there a terminal command that will tell us the needed info for the power supply and what is in use etc..?

It appears to be a 5oo from what i can see on the side of it.

If you want to compute what you are using (power wise), you need to determine the cpu usage, the motherboard usage, all drives, etc, and I would recommend allowing for at least 150 to 200 watts over the total that you calculate. It is not good to load the supply too close to its rated load. It shortens the life of the power supply. Also I have seen many, perhaps most, people when building a computer that spend many dollars on the other components, only to cheapen out on the power supply. It is a major mistake, in my humble opinion. Never mind how I figured that out:p:p, but it was many, many moons ago.

Although you've moved on with the video card purchase now, I did find this link that describes using dmidecode to get some information reported from BIOS (not sure about UEFI compatibility). My own BIOS would not accept the commands below for a power supply report only, but using dmidecode by itself gives a lot of other info on my system (just nothing about power supply which is probably why the "type 39" failed for me).

Run as root or use sudo:

Yeah, that's what I got on my desktop (BIOS) too. Try dmidecode by itself though and have a peek. Lots of info there.

Just to round the whole thing off.......

I opted to buy....
Gigabyte nVidia GeForce GT 710 2GB PCIe Video Card DDR3 HDMI DVI VGA Low Profile Heatsink Silent (~GV-N710D3-2GL)

...it arrived yesterday, and I then looked around a few you tuve vids to get an idea of just how this is fitted etc...


The hardware people just love to muddy the waters....drag red herrings everywhere...

Step 1...take side off pc case.

Step 2 plug the card in and secure it where it pokes through the back of the case with a screw.

Step3. plug the monitor leads into the new graphics card...reconnect power cables etc etc, and turn the pc on

then......menu...driver manager......click to install the nvidia driver....nvidia 375.66-OubuntuO

(future experience may have me install the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau open source driver....but for now all is rather cool)

Enjoy being able to actually READ the print on the second screen !!!!....with out squinting and moving closer and closer to that screen !

No more squiggly lines across the screen....images appear to load quicker....

The whole process of fitting the graphics card took approx 5 minutes

Waiting for the driver to download and install in driver manager took longer.

...on the subject of those red herrings....

I now find that the pc boots with a blank screen......no sign of life until about 25 seconds into the procedure, when the monitors turn on and then my desktop appears !

oh well...back to the drawing board !

Would I be near the money in thinking....If i was to pull the monitor connection cords off the graphics card connections....and reconnect them to the original connections......then boot...select f11...get into setup....in there somewhere should be some settings for the new card (i hope)....and maybe alter something that will turn the graphics card "on" right from the point where I hit the 'start' button...?

Definitely worth a look in your settings... there used to often be a selection between the onboard video versus a separate video card. I don't think it likely to detect what model it is, and the card specs, etc.

Glad you've got it up and running... and can see the improvement in quality. Loss of the splash screen is probably worth the trade off if you can't get it restored.
