Will my wifi, printer, external DVD and other peripherals
work with Mint or is there a lot of legwork to do tweaking
Mint to work with peripherals?

I'm worried they won't work after the Mint install, hence my
slight hesitation to fully break with windows OS -although I would like
to.Thanks in advance.

X31 Thinkpad, Win XP sp3

Can you give the make and model of the devices? Most external DVD (and bluray) readers and writers work out of the box. For printers it can depend on brand.

Use a live-boot cd for your distro, and try out your peripherals. If they work with the live boot, then they'll work with a permanent install. If they don't work, they just may need a driver that didn't get included in the live-boot. But first, have a go with the live-boot.
