Hello,

Yesterday, installed POP_OS Linux distro on a laptop running windows and replaced windows.

After installation, I find WiFi tab missing under Settings.

I am a new Linux user, I don't know if the issue is related to hardware or drivers.

While running Windows I could get WiFi working using USB dongle but that is not working in POP.

Please help!

Welcome to the forums

It's a mix of your Kit [ network components] and POP, Pop is NOT a full distribution although its based on Ubuntu, it is created especially by system 76 for its own built business computers so doesn't carry a full range of drivers and codecs, When it works out of the box it can be a good distribution, when it doesn't , it's a pain in the butt..
Steps to take
1] disable windows quick start [usually found in the BIOS]
2] go to https://github.com/kelebek333/rtl8188fu
3] open a terminal
4] copy and paste the instructions one at a time, entering after each

If all goes well your Wi-Fi should now work, but be prepared to find other things not working as you use Pop

Forgot to add, you WILL need either Ethernet wired internet access or a tethered mobile phone

Hello @rbulin,
Welcome to the Linux.org Forums and Linux. What @Brickwizard has said is good advice. One thing with Realtek chips they don't often show up in network manager until after their firmware & drivers have been successfully installed and machine rebooted. Unfortunately they can be a pain to install and get the right one working with your chip set. But stick with it and you'll get it and learn much in the process. This page even though made for Mint should still work for POPOS also. It may be of help
One other thing. You should go to a terminal and type this command and see if there is any hard blocked Item listed.
Code:
rfkill list
you should get a list that looks similar to this.
Code:
0: tpacpi_bluetooth_sw: Bluetooth
    Soft blocked: yes
    Hard blocked: no
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
    Soft blocked: no
    Hard blocked: no
Good luck and best wishes.

Thank you, Brickwizard,

1] I looked at BIOS but I don't see any windows quick start option there to disable it.

2) I tried that Github solution yesterday but as I ran the first command : sudo apt-get install build-essential git dkms linux-headers-$(uname -r) in terminal, I got the following output:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
linux-headers-5.19.0-76051900-generic is already the newest version (5.19.0-76051900.202207312230~1660780566~22.04~9d60db1).
build-essential is already the newest version (12.9ubuntu3).
dkms is already the newest version (2.8.7-2ubuntu2).
git is already the newest version (1:2.34.1-1ubuntu1.4).
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 11 not upgraded.
that said verything was already the newest version I just stopped there.

Should I go on executing other commands?

Thank you, kc1di.

rfkill list brings up nothing :(

I'll go through the article you provided.

That is ok. If possible try to find out from the manufacture's web page which wifi card they used in that machine.
If it does not work out I would install a different Distribution. Say MX-21 AHS or PClinuxos they usually come with the drivers already installed. Even Mint may be easier to start with. Keep at it. Don't let it frustrate you and you'll get it at some point.

@kc1di we already know which wireless chip, and its not very common, rt8188fu

@Brickwizard & @kc1di,

what @Brickwizard suggested worked :)

I can access WiFi through WiFi USB dongle now.

Thanks so much to both of you!

Depends on how old your kit is, if it's pre Win 10 then it may not have it.

@rbulin
can you now run in a terminal inxi -Nn and copy/paste back here [you may need to install inxi from the repository]

Shouldn't WiFi also work without the usb dongle ? If I remove the dongle, WiFi disappears.

Only if it has a built-in Wi-Fi that can be detected, your Inxi report only shows your network card [device 1]and the USB W-Fi adaptor [device 2]
your laptop would have come with either an intel Wi-Fi or I suspect more likely the Atheros QCA61x4A, as it is not unusual for lt not to be recognised on Linux laptops, So let us try an engineer's trick which often works [but not always] with the laptop switch on, save any work then press and hold down the power button for 60 seconds [this will force a bios re-set on next boot] and then switch on, now run inxi -Nn and look for a second wi-fi
Oh and it should have windows quick start, it may be in the bios power settings

I did as you instructed, held down the power button with laptop switched on but within 15 seconds it rebooted :) I don't know if it really reset bios.

Inxi o/p after reboot is as below.

Under Power Management in BIOS, I see below options but no Windows quick start.
  1. AC Behaviour
  2. Enable Intel Speed Shift Tech
  3. Auto on time
  4. USB wake support
  5. Advanced battery charge configuration
  6. Primary battery charge configuration

On Dell's support page for the laptop model Intel 3165 and 7265 Wi-Fi Driver is listed.

on some other site Intel and Qualcomm drivers listed for this laptop model and the list has the driver (Atheros QCA61x4A) you mentioned above.

confused now.

confused now.
There are about 7 variants to the Dell 1535 component wise, the 37 [which i did not spot] will give the full spec.
It is unusual for Intel WI_FI not to be recognised immediately as it is fairly common [must be a quirk of Pop]
the reason it re-booted after less than 20 seconds instead of clearing the Bios is probably quick start is still enabled [I will do some more investigations,] it must be coming up to 5PM [17-00 hrs] I.S.T. I will be about till around 1 am I.S.T. so I have some time to do a bit more searching. at least for the time being, we have you up and running with the USB dongle.

Just had a thought, have you installed POP alongside windows [duleboot] or in a VM [virtual machine] as this would make a difference.
