I recently installed Ubuntu. I have mint and had a wifi connection issue. It was fixed by installing a new kernal. So I tried to do that with Ubuntu and can't get the kernal to boot. It says need to load kernal first .

4.15.0-45-generic seems like the only kernal that is currently working for me with the wifi, but is slow. Should I stay on this? If so how do I delete the other kernals?

Have you tried an earlier kernel ? try a few.

These tools will help installing a kernel in Linux/Ubuntu

Ukuu

UKTools

Be sure to read carefully first

and as always, having a TIMESHIFT backup/snapshot is mandatory

I installed at least one older kernal and no luck. Just to get everyone caught up. I had the same problem with mint. The problem to me is the wifi card I have installed on the laptop.

Just a heads up for Helpers -

Chris had a Thread here

https://www.linux.org/threads/wifi-help.21380/page-3

where ultimately we were able to get him going by upgrading to Linux Kernel 4.18.0 -13, and doing some other voodoo.

He has a Realtek RTL8723 driver in place. Details also over there.

Chris :)

Now I know you have Timeshift on the Mint, but have you got it on the Ubuntu yet?

If not, then follow Brian's link above to Ukuu page. and do two (2) things:

1. Take the commands listed there to install Tony George's PPA to your Ubuntu

BUT

2. Where the 3rd line of code says

Code:
sudo apt-get install ukuu

and add a space and timeshift at the end, so

Code:
sudo apt-get install ukuu timeshift

This will install both Ukuu and Timeshift.

If you already have Timeshift installed, then just

Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -y install ukuu

Once Ukuu is installed, launch it.

In Ukuu, you should find that there are kernel listings up to and including 4.20.10 .

Personally, I would go straight for

4.18.0 -13

and install it, since we know it works.

Cheers
