Hello,

I am facing a painful problem with Wifi connection under "Slax 9" based on "Debian 9.12" (cat /etc/debian_version).
Wicd is installed as standard with this release.

The automatic Wifi connection at startup fails, it must be restarted manually through the Wicd GUI.

Right after a reboot, if I ping a big reliable website (amazon, google...), it answers OK 4 times, then 4 errors, then 4 OK... to end up permanently in error of resolution of the name of the site.

I have to go through the Wicd GUI to connect manually. Then it works well, the connection remains stable.

However, at the very beginning, the automatic Wifi connection at startup had been working for several months !?!

How do I fix this???

Below is some info.
Of course I'm at your disposal to provide you some more.

In advance, thanks for your help.

Steve.

Hi!

Here are other info... I hope it can help.
Tell me if you need other data.

NB: an internal wifi chip is used.

I hate this kind of sporadic problem !

Sometimes the wifi connection starts automatically but most of the time, it starts and then it quickly stops after a dozen of seconds.
If I restart the connection manually, it is OK and stable !

Any idea of how I could troubleshoot that ?

Thanks!

Steve.

What is the contents of - /etc/default/wicd - file: it should look something like

# Start the daemon by default, let the user disable it.
# Use “no” (without quotes) to make /etc/init.d/wicd *NOT* start the WICD daemon.
START_DAEMON=no
# By default don’t kill connections on daemon shutdown, see
# https://bugs.debian.org/816076 and
# https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~wicd-devel/wicd/experimental/revision/851
DAEMON_ARGS=”–keep-connection”
START_DAEMON=no (change =no to =yes) save and restart

Hello,

I've checked, I well have START_DAEMON=yes in /etc/default/wicd (and DAEMON_ARGS=”–keep-connection” )

Just after reboot, Wifi connection is well automatically established since I can ping a web site , during a few seconds (see my 2nd post).

Then ping fails and I have to start manually a connection by using Wicd GUI to solve the problem.

It's crazy !

Any other idea to solve the problem ?

Thanks.

Steve.

I see in your second post - "ping: aaa.com: Temporary failure in name resolution" this is usually caused by a bad resolv.conf configuration located at - /etc/resolv.conf - make sure that file has at least one entry or both
nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 8.8.4.4

if you changed anything make sure and run
Code:
systemctl restart systemd-resolved.service

Hello,

I've followed your advice but alas it doesn't solve the problem.
In /etc/resolv.conf , I found the IP adress of my router (192.168.1.1), I put # to comment it and added 8.8.8.8 just after.

resolv.conf:
Code:
#nameserver 192.168.1.1
nameserver 8.8.8.8

Code:
systemctl restart systemd-resolved.service
reboot
==> I still have the problem...

NB: I upgraded the sytem to "Debian 9.13" (cat /etc/debian_version) but it doesn't change anything (it solved the prob. on another very old PC).

Could it be possible to use

Code:
iwconfig wp2s0 essid MYESSID key s:ABCDE12345

and to obtain the IP address, to now request it with the Dynamic Host Client:

Code:
sudo dhclient wlan0

If yes, where should I put these commands ?

Thanks !

Here is what I get just after reboot (whatever the web site: google.com, amazon.com...):

ping: google.com: Temporary failure in name resolution
root@slax:~# ping amazon.com
ping: amazon.com: Temporary failure in name resolution
root@slax:~# ping aaa.com
ping: aaa.com: Temporary failure in name resolution

With an IP address:

Code:
root@slax:~# ping 45.60.62.121
connect: Network is unreachable

IMHO, no name resolution because no access to DNS since network unreachable.(

wicd service is well started but "Network is unreachable" error :

Code:

Try allowing port 53 and 43
Code:
sudo ufw allow 53/tcp
sudo ufw allow 43/tcp
sudo ufw reload

Hi!

I can't see very well why it could be a problem with ports since wifi connection can be established manually via Wicd GUI.

I think I've found a workaround with a little tool called "wicd-cli" that allows to start wifi connection with wicd command line.

Code:
$ apt-get install wicd-cli
$ wicd-cli --wireless --network 0 -c

"network 0" is my Wifi AP, the 1st scanned (no roaming with this PC).

To connect automatically, I put this command at 1st line of
/root/.fluxbox/startup because it takes a few seconds to start the Wifi connection and so it's better to start it in background at the begining of desktop initialization .

Code:
wicd-cli --wireless --network 0 -c &

I've tested 3 or 4 reboots and cold starts, it's perhaps not very "clean" but it works ! :)
=> no more need to start wifi via Wicd GUI.

Of course, it's a little bit frustrating not to understand why automatic connecting mode of Wicd doesn't work...
(it used to work many months ago)

Something is "broken" somewhere but where ???

Steve.
