Yes, I use "WhatsApp" to pair my cell phone and my desktop so I can text from my desktop. Big keyboards are so much more friendly than those crappy virtual things on your cell phone screen. Easier on the old eyes too!

Yes, that's the way it works. You can type on your computer, but only as long as it is paired with your phone.

I find that a better alternative is Telegram Desktop. If the recipient also has Telegram. Once set up, with your phone, you can type on your computer without any further reference to your phone. https://desktop.telegram.org/

I have Wire and it doesn't cost me anything. Works great! I prefer it over Skype!
