What's With Cloudflare?

Notwithstanding the ongoing shenanigans vis-a-vis some of the smaller, more "niche" browsers not being 'recognised' by CloudFlare - yup; I'm talking about Pale Moon here - I know which I'd rather put up with.

Mike. ;)
The latest palemoon, palemoon-33.7.0.linux-x86_64-gtk2.tar.xz, works normally on this linux.org site at the moment on this machine on which this post is being written. Just noting the improvement since earlier versions did have trouble with crashes and failures when trying to tick the box to verify being human.

@bob466 :-

Um...heh. Okay....

I've got a feeling we're talking about different "profiles" here! What I call the browser profile is it's configuration settings; you appear to be referring to something else?

Whatever, if it appears to have "fixed" your issue then just go with it for now. Keep us informed as to the ongoing 'outcome', please. I'd be curious to know if the issue remains solved...

Mike. ;)

These are my profiles...

Tried to Login today with Vivaldi and got this...

I don't mind ticking the box a few times but it's the bloody loop that really gets me...then I closed the Browser...opened it and one tick and I'm here...if I want to access this site I'll have to use another Browser.

Now using Brave...went to Linux.org... Logged in and can post for now...fingers crossed again.

It's enough to make me take up drinking.

DNSCrypt configuration options

DNSCrypt is a less frequently used DNS encryption protocol, but it is supported by Quad9. To read more about DNSCrypt, see our post here, or you may download the configuration files and stamps by following https://www.quad9.net/quad9-resolvers.toml

Cloudflare ...is it on a 'timer' ?

I visit a few threads....then to this thread....read the post above...decide to post a reply.

Fill in my reply...containing a couple of links....tap reply.....&&&&*&....Damn !.....will not post....refreshing does zero.

Retype the whole thing again.

This is becoming real ordinary, really quickly.

Welcome to my nightmare...I'm using Vivaldi right now...went to Linux.org...no cloudfail and can post.

Something is very wrong.

It's good that the forum is using a security mechanism and I don't mind going through it from time to time. What annoys me is that I need to go through it every single time. No matter if I'm logged in or posting from the same IP address I used an hour before. Surelly, there must be an option to make regular, registered users' life easier.

I put a beer on that, because I agree.

Unfortunately, the Spammers we attract, for being a popular forum, do not see it that way.

We (Rob has) implemented a number of measures to try to cut down on them, with reasonable positive results, but their numbers and tenacity outweigh our available options.

So far, we live in hope. ;)

Wizard.

Nite all, enjoy your Linux

BTW - we have Staff from USA, UK, and Australia, in order to try to police the place, and serve Members and Viewers alike, for as much a part of each day as we can, but it is not easy.

What I'm saying is just maybe there is a setting somwhere that could make a difference. You don't see the Cloudfare message every single time when you click on a new topic or a new allert, so it must remember you between these interactions.

@osprey :-

Heh. Um....yeah; that is true, but.....it's not quite what it seems.

Essentially, CloudFlare have given Pale Moon what amounts to a "hall pass", pending code improvements for which they've been given a deadline of June 30th. If they haven't implemented these by then, behaviour will return to what it was previously.

(And if "undesirable behaviour" is detected - whatever that means! - the "hall pass" will probably be revoked sooner. If the worst comes to the worst, Moonchild is considering taking the matter to the European Court of Human Rights, on the basis that internet access is now considered to BE a human right, with whatever browser is chosen by the user.....and CloudFlare, as an organisation, do NOT have the right to decide who gets to access it or not.)

(shrug...)

It's an "ongoing" issue. We'll see what happens.

Yes. If your activity is frequent enough, you'll only see the CloudFlare interruption once.

If you're going slower and take a while to type a reply, you may be timed out and need to pass the CloudFlare check again.

Don't refresh that tab when it gives you an error.

Instead, open a new tab. If it happens to me, I just look for a close link on the page and open that in a new tab. When you open a new tab that's set to go to this site, it'll send you through the authenticator again.

This means you won't lose anything you typed - though the system will be saving your typed text for a while, but maybe not long enough (or frequently enough) to mean everything is saved.

So, don't refresh. Open a new tab and head to Linux.org. Do the CloudFlare thing again. Then, go back to the tab that you had issues with and you should be able to hit the post button and have your comment posted.

Why not Google does it in Google Chrome and gets away with it..

It say's what ad blockers are allowed and which ad blockers are not allowed I see no difference here other than Google has the money to do what it wants.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't mind the forum extra security step.
If I have to check a box every time I logon / login than that's what I'll do.
If it takes to long to do that than don't use the forum.

Sorry for the post quoted in full....I dont usually do that.......doing that annoys me.....a waste of space if nothing else.

This is not directed personally, David.

I have to question if the 'gain' made by introducing the 'cloudflare thing' is worth the obvious discomfort/loss of site performance/need to use work arounds, as you have described above, when something as simple as an error has occurred/need to copy each and every post in case it goes belly up/etc etc etc..(add all the negative aspects of using this site that have presented themselves since the introduction of the 'cloudflare thing' here...)
....is worth it.

Many would argue vehemently that is it a right royal pain in the butt which has not improved their experience/time here in any way shape or form, and has in fact hindered their paths.

Opposing that, is the ever present existence of the jerks who thrive on the misery of others......up to and including a desire to close a site down, with their shenanigans, which of course renders it unavailable for all of us.

Perhaps it is about time we heard from @Rob re the success or failure of this current approach.

Edit to Add: Is this 'challenge' presented to guests who approach this site for answers/help?
Have the numbers of new members/guests declined since its introduction?

Rob HAS posted about this. Search for his posts.

Respectfully, there is no point in complaining.

For your further edification a search, as below....

Are you using a vpn by any chance?

I am not using a vpn when I access Linux.org.

Well, before this, we had about 7 minutes of downtime, which people (including you) have complained about. We now have 1m 43s of downtime at this point.

Other than that, I'm out of ideas. Well, ideas that you're going to like.
