What's the best Linux distro for a beginner?

When you have two pieces of dissimilar RAM the computer will run at the lowest speed.

You need a lightweight distro.

Try something like Lubuntu.

NOTE! You cannot install many heavyweight apps on a lightweight distro without weighing it down.

Puppy Linux is also a lightweight distro althought their download pages seem to be offline for maintenance.
 


TinyCore is always my recommendation for extremely low spec systems though it isn't the most newbie friendly distribution out there.
Maybe but it is fun to build something from nothing when it is very minimal like TC is.
 
I was referring to their download page being the murga forums since that is where is linked to on the download page. Now that I am able to download puppy I can play around with puppy again haven't installed that in a while.
Yes hard to believe they haven't updated their Puppy Linux.com site. I'll have to do something.
