what do I need in a router?

Currently I have one computer in the house. There is no wifi. I am going to have a second computer and I need to know what is required to have both computers operating on one internet connection. I assume a router is the answer but I know nothing about them except that there are a ton of them when searching on line. What do I need to look for? As I said, there is no wifi and I prefer to not use wifi but I may in the future.

if your use case is such that you will never use wifi (a phone, a 2nd computer/laptop, etc) then there is zero point in getting one - but a lot of laptops are now doing away with the ethernet port, so you will likely need a wifi capable router at some point in the future. If you're only ever planning on using desktops/mini pc's and prefer running ethernet through the walls, a 4 port unmanaged switch is probably fine.

I personally use an Asus router, model RT-AX82U - all devices other than the pi-hole (which still uses ethernet) that i have at home use wifi (two desktops, two laptops, cellphones) and have had zero issues with it.
