You can give all CPU or RAM to Vbox VM if you want
I think you misunderstood (or maybe I wasn't as clear as I thought I was), when I said that "the VM will use 1 core and a max of 4 gigs of RAM" is because in Vbox you'll see this:

Green is ok, red is not. If you try going "red" VBox will warn you with "invalid settings detected".
Because Vbox is type II hypervisor it will never reach the performance of bare metal and has other limitations
Yes, no VM will ever be as fast and responsive as bare metal.
In short for max efficiency software within software (e.g. Vbox) is not the best option
It might be, if all you want/need to do is for testing purposes. VMs have a use case, they're not intended to be a substitute for bare metal.

I treat the warnings like the "sell by" date on packaged food. Still Ok after that point. Only testing will tell one way or the other. That is why I use a minimal OS as the host.
