Hello, and thank you for reading this with intention to help.

I have a pretty old computer here, it is almost 10 years. It is working unbelievably fine with Windows 7, but I really want to squeez everything from it. It is HP EliteBook 6930 p with 1 ram and WiFi module added (specs: https://www.cnet.com/products/hp-el...o-downgrade-2-gb-ram-250-gb-hdd-series/specs/ ).

I am really looking for speed on working with documents, programming and browsing. I am open to new ideas and exploring, that is why I want to try Linux. The main question would be which one to choose? If you do have time, please paste a link on a guide for that specific Linux platform too, it would appreciate that. Thank you!!!

1) The world of Linux is not crazy. Why is it crazy for you?

2) The specs that you point to says 2Gb of RAM. Why have you now got only 1Gb of RAM? It also says that the machine can run a maximum of 8Gb RAM. Can you or do you want to increase towards that amount?

3) It is a mistake to think that modern Linux needs considerably fewer resources than Windows. With only 1Gb of RAM, you will not get very far. You will probably not be an increase in speed over what you have.

Hello, thank you for you response.

1) I think that because it is totaly new to me and from what I have already read I think that is a big deal. So I sumed up those two things and retoricaly saying it is a crazy world for me.

2)The specs are 2 Gb of ram and 3 or 4 years ago I added 1 Gb, therefore it has 3 Gb now. I can add more too, that is not really a problem, I just wanted to state the situation I have now.

3)Thank you for clearing this up for me. That helps a lot because I will not expect better performance thus I will not be disappointed.

Thank you again, I hope that it is a bit clearer now. The main question still remains.

Look here: https://www.pcworld.com/article/291...get-started-with-linux-a-beginners-guide.html

With 3 Gb you should be alright. I would specifically recommend Linux Mint and Linux Lite for beginners

As ever, I would warn against throwing out Windows altogether until you are absolutely sure. You may want to go back.

If you decide on virtualisation be aware that about half the memory will go to the host OS and about half to the virtualisation. So about 1.5Gb to Windows and 1.5Gb to Linux

Hi Arnas, and welcome! Learning anything new can drive you crazy. But determination can make you succeed. Good luck!

Cheers
