There are No best distributions, only the best one to suite you and your machine, download and try several "live"
As your machine is of 2008 vintage [aprox] it may or may not be USB bootable, If it is then download and try several distributions to see what you like,if not USB bootable you will need a stack of DVD-r discs. For a machine of that age I would go for some of the lighter builds, Mint LXDE, Kubuntu, MX-linux, Debian with additional driver pack, Linux-Lite to name a few.
