Hello. Today I made the switch from Windows to Linux, I love it. My problem is I always have to have the bootable usb drive in the laptop to use Linux. I thought it would write to my HDD and boot as normal from there?? Can it be done?

System: Toshiba satellite c50-a-1dv, Intel core i3, 8gb ram, 1TB HDD.

Yes, it can. You will need to use the installer on your Live USB.

What distro are you using?

Most Linux OSes do not write to the hard drive when using it in live mode generally when in live mode there is an icon on the desktop which will initiate the installer or there maybe a menu option to install it and some may have both, you will have to use that to start the installation process. Below is Linux Mint 20 you can see the CD icon on the left that is what you use either double click it or right click and select execute
