Urban Terror

There are many different types of games, but the most popular seems to be the First Person Shooter games. For Linux systems, a good First Person Shooter game is “Urban Terror”. Urban Terror is a free game which makes it even better.

Urban Terror is a multiplayer game which runs on a Quake III Arena compatible engine. The system requirements are:

  • CPU: Pentium 4 1.2GHz or higher.
  • RAM: 256MBs (512MBs highly recommended).
  • VIDEO: NVidia or ATI card with 128MB RAM (256MB or more highly recommended).
  • HDD: 50GB, but the more the better for additional levels.

To get Urban Terror, go to the site http://www.urbanterror.info/downloads/ to download it. Here, you can download either the Installer or the Complete Full Version. The Installer is small and allows you to start the Installer which downloads the the current complete version. When you get the installer, the file is compressed and can be opened with an archiver program. Once opened, there should be a choice of two installers. One is the 32-bit version and the other is a 64-bit version. Run the proper one for you system.

Once started, you should see a screen similar to Figure 1. Figure 1 shows the license agreement and you must select “Accept” to continue.

After you accept the License Agreement, you should then see a window similar to Figure 2. The screen lets you click the “Download” button to start downloading the full version.

The download should appear something like Figure 3.

NOTE: If you download the whole package, you can extract it where you need it. Once extracted, run the file “UrTUpdater” with the extension appropriate to you architecture. The program will check for updates and then allow you to play as shown in Figure 4.

While playing, there are nine menu items to give you control of the game. The menus are:

So, after pressing “Play”, you should see a screen similar to Figure 6.

Select a server to connect and play. The servers with the lowest “ping” response time are those closest to you. The lower response time will provide faster game play. When connecting to a server you may be asked to download the game map. The map is the information for the area in which the players are playing. You need to download the map to play on the server. Every server may have different maps and they can change daily on some servers (or even faster).

Go ahead, download Urban Terror and give it a try!

Great game, I've been playing for years!

You can also register for a free account at the Urban Terror website, which will allow you to create a profile and to get a unique key which you can use to log into the game and associate your profile with your copy of the game, allowing you to keep track of your stats etc. Registering is optional, you don't have to if you don't want to.

I'm quite often found on the "~|DN| DrunkNoobs Eagle 24/7 ~" server, using the name 'JasonHippy', but I do also play on a few other (mainly European) servers.

Frag ya later! :)

I guess it's a bit easier to add this to sources.list
Code:
deb http://archive.getdeb.net/ubuntu vivid-getdeb games
Then of course update your repositories and find Urban Terror in them.

You can also find me named Mitto_Gee somewhere, please don't kill me, I am a noob.

NOTE: On sources.list you can type your particular version of Ubuntu instead of vivid. Also please note that though id Tech 3 engine uses GPL license, Urban Terror's code and assets are closed source.
