Greetings all. I currently have Mint 21.3 and it is running magnificently on both my laptop and my home PC. I found a useful tutorial on upgrading Mint 21.3 to 22.
Question1. Is it a good time now to upgrade 21.3 to 22 or should I wait a bit for any bugs in 22 to be worked through? I am thinking about stability.
Question 2. The tutorial on youtube seems very clear and useful to me. The speaker suggests some changes to 21.3 before upgrading. Do you agree with his thinking and approach in the tutorial. Many thanks. Cheers

I followed the above links to upgrade from 21.3 to 22

I did not change or delete or fix anything....I simply sat back (for 49 minutes) and allowed it to do its thing....I simply clicked yes and ok etc and marvelled at the amount of code flashing past my eyes. I was "warned" that some damn thing or other would possibly bring about the end of the world as we know it......I did not care i clicked to continue. No side steps at all.

It is still running today, like a charm. very quick. Feels quite solid

Total success.....this was not on my main pc, so it didnt have a great number of apps installed. Whether that would make any great difference, I am unsure....I dont think so. It did delete 2 or 3 apps which apparently weren't up to snuff for 22. Not a biggie.

I have also done a fresh install on yet another pc. Again, seamless...runs like a charm. Equally quick

Whether or not you upgrade now, by whichever method....that's your call.

There is probably no need to considering that 21.3 is supported until 2027.

However....I do understand the "itch'

I would watch the youtube thing right through and then read Clem's blurb through as well......mainly to see if there are any discrepancies. (This is if you decide to bite the bullet.)

Please.....you do have a full backup of 21.3 that you can reload onto that drive, in case things (for whatever reason) go south..????

Thank

Thanks Condo. Yep. The itch is there. Think that I'll do it your way. Will have a close look at your links as well and yes, full backup first. Cheers John

For what it's worth, I did an in-place upgrade for my Mint box.

Here's the amusing thing...

I did all the updating and then didn't even bother rebooting for a couple of weeks. I can fix anything that breaks so I am not concerned. However, it went flawlessly.

I ran the upgrade to the new version. I waited until I felt a need to reboot. I rebooted. I logged back into the system (sort of - that one has automatic login enabled 'cause I'm not worried about that level of security).

I'd be hard pressed to think of a harder test of the upgrade path than the one that I took. It updated and I applied even more updates before the system acted on the first upgrade. Again, it was flawless...

The whole Ubuntu ecosphere, including those derived from it, is amazingly good at upgrading to new versions. I expected to fix an issue or two. (It was also a month or so.)

Nope...

Nada...

It just plain worked. I'm quite surprised, to be frank. I installed the upgrade to the current version of Mint and then didn't even reboot until a couple of weeks later. I only rebooted at that point because I knew I had a potential for dirty power on the way and I didn't think that'd help anything.

It's awesome. Years ago, we'd worry about things like that. Today, upgrading a major Linux distro to the newest version is pretty routine and unlikely to cause any problems. It's a great thing to have on our side. We can legitimately say that upgrades are pretty painless and routine upgrades are very unlikely to fail.

Thanks KG. Good to know. Cheers
