Ok, so my first question is, how to update to the latest edition of Mint ?........it seems the version I have downloaded to the Flash Drive became out of date in 2023.......any help appreciated......

G'day Del 80, Welcome to Linux.org

Which version of Linux mint is on your pc at present ?

more detail, please...

Click on menu, type in Welcome Screen...tap enter....it will give you the detail in the bottom right hand corner

so your proberbly running Mint 19 [eol 2023]

you could try the following from the terminal, unless @Condobloke has other ideas

sudo apt update sudo apt install mintupgrade

sudo mintupgrade

if it works it will chug along for a while, how long will depend on your download speed and the amount of files that need updateing

if/when it finishes running then

sudo apt remove mintupgrade && sudo reboot

The better solution here....bearing in mind you will eventually have more than one laptop to work on.....will be to do a clean Fresh install.

It will save you mountains of grief in both the short and long term.

Your downloads should come from either here at Linux.org or direct from : https://linuxmint.com/

If you are familiar with torrenting.... https://linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=316

The Installation guide here : https://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/ ......is good but will still leave you with questions etc ....We can advise on any questions you have

A reply telling is of your laptops specs, make and model would help......more so to help you choose which DE (desktop environment to use)........Mint comes with three...Cinnamon, Mate, and XFCE
I note you already have Cinnamon on one laptop....how does it run??

By the time you have finished you will have the whole exercise down pat !

I forgot to expand on Torrenting.

I have downloaded every .iso, via torrent.......It removes the need to verify the downloads....the torrent client does that for you.

That's the file copied to the flash drive.......here goes !!.........

The file doesnt get 'copied' to the flash drive......if you are using a windows PC to do this, you use an app called Rufus or Ventoy

They are quite special....they make the usb stick BOOTABLE. This is a MUST

Rufus: https://rufus.ie/en/

Download it and follow the instructions on their site

When it has finished, you ned to plug the usb stick and reboot.... and select to boot to that usb stick

The make and model of your laptop will decide the exact procedure to follow in iorder to get it to boot to that usb stick

Once you have got it booted to the usb....that is called a LIVE environment of Linux......use it to be sure that the internet and sound are working....you can do anything you like in that Live instance...play around with it etc etc etc...BUT....if you shutdown or reboot, any changes you have made to it will disappear when you reboot it

if you are datisfied that it is opk and want to FULLY install it....there is an icon on the desktop that says "Install Linux Mint"

Double click on that and the install will start.
Tick the box etc for multi media codecs ect

refer to this if you get lost : https://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/

You will be asked if you wish to install Linux Mint on its own and wipe everything else on the drive

Select that if you are ok with wiping everything else on the drive.

When it finishes installing, (about 15 - 20 minutes)....you can either continue running in Live mode....or you can click to reboot and try out the full install
You will be asked to take the usb stick out and then press enter

After it has rebooted ....you will be running a fully installed LM22 (Linux Mint 22)

let us know how you get on

Thanks Condobloke.....Yes I used Rufus......version 22 is now installed on this old Toshiba Satellite laptop, and is currently updating.......everything went as you said......many thanks again........

Well, it's not going well at all......Linux did install initially, and updated, but now it either won't load, or takes forever to load........maybe my hardware is too old ?........

Thanks Wizard......it just won't run on this fairly old Toshiba Satellite, so gonna try try it on a slightly newer more powerful machine.......it did install ok and updated itself though........

Yes, it IS Mint 19......it won't do anything now.......
Mint 19 is end of life and can't be upgrade at this point so you will have to download the new version from here
And burn it to a usb drive. follow the instructions here.

fairly old Toshiba Satellite,
The satellite has been a Toshiba group product from mid 1990's those produced between 1994 and 2005 we're mainly 32 bit machines so most modern Linux will not work on them,, the quality has also been up and down , some at the lower end of entry level up to better than half decent, if its post 2005 with at least 2gb ram then first try Mint LMDE6, if before 2005 try Antix 32 bit,

if the machine was built for windows 8.1 or newer, then make sure you disable both Windows secure boot and windows quick-kstart both should be in the BIOS/UEFI
