Unable to get mouse to select desktop items

Good afternoon
Have installed linuxmint on a aspire 7730 laptop but I now have a problem with the laptop mouse,I can move the mouse around the desktop but when clicking on any item on the desktop I get no response and don’t now how to solve the problem as I am new to Linux os be grateful for any help

Does this just happen with your trackpad or also with a real mouse? Are you able to oben the start menu etc. or does this also not work? Does your trackpad have physical buttons to click, or is a click just a tap on the pad?

Have you enabled the "Tap to click" in System Settings > Mouse > Touchpad > Tap to click slider?
