ubuntu's official forums going down.

@The Duck :-

I very much doubt that long-inactive accounts would have been carried forward to the new venue, however.

Mike. ;)
AFAIK only active accounts are transferable to the Discourse forum which makes sense.

Discourse is de facto a forum package, but with new names for things. Be open minded and it is not much difference from XF or vB. Forums are named Categories, so the biggest difference is in a more dynamic behavior then in old forums, something that is in the pipeline for XF also. But the biggest difference is that Discourse is Open Source! If I should select software for a new forum Discourse would be very high on my list of candidates and my old pals vB and XF would be low as they are proprietary. It would be a few other packages also above the two old ones.

Been looking at the Discourse forum doesn't look to difficult to navigate.

Welcome to the forum @knut.

Update.
My new opinion of Ubuntu Discourse forum.

PLAIN AND SIMPLE IT SUCKS imo.

if this is the direction of new forums then I will be done with forums.

I just don't like it and I tried to like it but my bold statement above says it all.

I will not explain my reasons as I know there are active Ubuntu and Lubuntu forum people on Linux .org .

Oh, feel free. Just don't, you know, go off the rails with it. If we don't know why you don't like it, we won't know what can be changed to improve it. (Not that I'm in any way associated with such decisions.)

I'm also not a huge fan. For me, it's just that I don't like the look and feel of the site. It can be used but it's just not what I'm comfortable with. I literally don't mind one bit if you don't like it.

I actually prefer the free forums over the paid forums, though VB and XenForo aren't too bad (with the latter growing on me, though the ACP isn't very intuitive). I like the old SMF and PHPbb forums. With their wide array of plugins, they can be quite useful. They're also what I'm used to, which I like.

I do like StackExchange's layout and features. So, I do like the AskUbuntu site. It's also a great wealth of helpful content. I don't think that will be going anywhere in the near future - but don't think of it as a forum because it's not really a forum and shouldn't be used as a forum.

I know nothing about the differing programs used to run forums. And I only run Ubuntu in a virtual machine right now.
But I thought I'd pop over and peruse the topic of this thread.
My reaction? The thing is, for me, confusing and cluttered. At first look, if I had a question about the Ubuntu OS, or hardware, or any other topic, it would take hours to even find the topic I was researching, let alone specific threads. Totally confusing for someone looking for answers to day to day questions.
Again, just my two cents worth. Not a complaint.

For me, the "rot" set in about 5 yrs or so ago. The ZorinOS forums were one of the first to switch to Discourse; I'd never been what you'd call a regular visitor anyway, but following their decision I can't remember the last time I did log-in.

Then the HaikuOS forums followed suit.....and almost immediately SliTaz went that way, too. Eurrgh...

I've been used to phpBB for a long time. Puppy has always used it; Slimjet, too.....and Pale Moon. Porteus, as well (I think). I believe the Mint forums are also users of phpBB...

Call me an "old fogey" if ya like, but Discourse is almost impossible to navigate around & get used to IF you don't use it at all regularly. To me, the layout is reminiscent of many "chat" apps.....and I'm not exactly a fan of those to begin with.

I also like Xenforo. Wasn't that keen to begin with, but it's growing on me...and seems quite popular, too.

I guess it all boils down to what you get used to. The only one I've never seen anywhere else - before OR since - is BleepingComputer's set-up; they use a software called "IPboard". Anyone seen it used by any other communities?
