Boot to the desktop and go to a terminal and type these commands and post the outputs back here.
Code:
inxi -Fxxxzr
systemd-analyze blame
I suspect that the system is looking for the disconected HDD and can't find it so it freezes.

Outout of inxi :

claudio@SOLE:~$ inxi -Fxxxzr

I believe the problem may be your Nvidia card. It list Nouveau for the driver. With that driver you may need to add nomodeset to the grub boot line to keep it from freezing during boot or install the correct Nvidia driver for that card.
This page may be of help.

Just to make sure I'm understanding...

It only freezes if there's no external drive plugged in?

You're also using Groovy (20.10)?

For starters, support for 20.10 in June of 2021 - going on a year ago.

Yes, It only freeze if there's no external drive plugged in.
I've just upgraded to hirsute (21.04) and the issue persists.

I do not understand the correlation between the fact that the computer does not start when the external hard drive is unplugged and the video card driver.
Thanx

I don't think it's related to your boot problem, but PCI card has the wrong driver installed
Device-2: Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: r8169 v: kernel

addendum.. just to add your Omen laptop is not made by HP but by Shenzhen Bmorn Technology Co. Ltd in China, we have had problems with some of their other out branded laptops

This leads me to think this is likely a grub issue - perhaps an fstab issue, but the latter seems less likely.

I'm really bad at diagnosing grub problems, but someone here is likely better than I.

Take this command and be sure to wrap the output in code tags when you post it here. Or maybe spoiler. Or maybe both.

Code:
cat /boot/grub/grub.cfg
