deep breaths.

I went ahead and got into the BIOS and took off secure boot and cleaned up the windows 10 pro install. need to keep that for class next semester.

went to install Ubuntu 24.04 and everything seemed to work. except for the wifi adapter. I went and brought a panda wireless ultra that specifically states it is for mint, ububntu, fedora, opensuse etc. that the drivers would be located on the disc. yes, my computer still has a dvd drive. I have contacted the company for the correct drivers for this but it was not working. it looked like it was working then the drivers for the usb card was not working.

I am at a standstill and just wondered out loud to my husband if VB would work to load ubuntu and he stated no. if the drivers are not being recognized then it will not render in any form for VM.

hes going to talk to some of his tech buddies and see if anyone has an extra test desktop they dont use and if i can have it just for linux. I haven’t even gotten to the parrot home install that my teacher wants. oh and the WSL did not work either to install the linux on the windows machine.

i do have to say the little bit of time i got to play with ubuntu before I realized all the drivers were not loading was nice!

Does the class require ubuntu? if not I would try Mint 22 it based on ubuntu but I find it works better. And with drivers you most likely don't need to install any for wireless unless it's realtek or broadcom. Intel is supported out of the box in the kernel. Just a suggestion.

This computer does not have a wifi installed on it. I had to buy one of the adapters to even get wifi as the ethernet cord will not reach downstairs. and hubby isn’t drilling holes into the floor of the upstairs to hang downstairs.

this is an old dell optiplex.

class does require ubuntu and parrot home. I was just going to get used to ubuntu for now until class starts in the middle of september. That way I am not completely lost when it starts. After the winter break we will start with parrot home and build packages on that we need from parrot sec.

If husband can get this spare parts desktop I am thinking of downloading Mint and Ubuntu to play around with them for the next 6 weeks before the classes start.

I have to take an AWS and Net+ class along with the unix and linux administrators class.

I use a realtek wifi from BrosTrend and the newer Linux kernels have built-in support for it. I'm still using an older kernel at the moment though.

realtek or broadcom
(Since Mint is Ubuntu based that means it comes with the "Driver Manager" which takes care of at least 90% of your driver issues in my experience. even "legacy" hardware.)

So on ubuntu right now you have no way to get internet? Than maybe a problem even if the drivers are on the disc it they may need other dependencies to be installed and you would have to be connected to do that. But don't give up it can be done.
and you'll learn from the experience.

My tech husband just tried to take the entire computer away from me as soon as I got it to work! I emailed the company and I was trying to install the drivers they said on the website…however, it was only for RedHat. everything is up and running. Husband was standing there like….HOW!!!!!??????

Glad you got it working (hope the Hubby does not take it away) Enjoy!
He calmed down and stopped looking at me funny. He is a bit shocked as he couldn’t figure it out and he is one that fixes what others broke while testing software and apps out. oops.
