When I login, the login screen says "Sorry, that didn't work" Then I try to login again then I get a blank screen w/ no desktop. I nearly takes me several reboots just to get it to my desktop. How do I fix this?

Ah sorry my friend you problem is during login in , not during booting .
I’m sorry I confused .

Thanks for trying, for now I got the Unity login screen until someone posts a solution. :)

Hi @Eddie Paul Litz ... can we get you to flesh out the details a little more? :)

Unity login screen

  1. So do I take it you have Ubuntu 16.04 or Ubuntu 18.04, or other?
  2. Do you still have the installation medium and is it DVD or USB stick?
  3. When I login, the login screen says "Sorry, that didn't work"
Is that exactly what it says or can you capture for us the exact wording of the error?
  4. Then I try to login again then I get a blank screen w/ no desktop
Is that totally blank or is there a blinking "-" at top left of screen?
  5. I nearly takes me several reboots just to get it to my desktop.
So does that mean that you eventually get into the desktop, where you have the Launcher on the left with several icons in it, and then can "move" throughout your system?
  6. Is Linux the only OS on your system or are you dualbooting with Windows?
If you are able to get into the desktop, press Ctrl-Alt-t and it will bring up Terminal. Then type and enter

Code:
inxi -Fxs

Copy and paste the output to us here, and we can get a better picture of your environment.

I note from one of your other threads your reference to chromecast, that you have likely been able to maintain a session on your computer for a period of time, so has this problem just developed, or has it been happening for some time and if so how long?

Cheers

18.4 LTS

I happened to have found a way to install the Unity Desktop on 18.4.

I installed it from the USB drive.

The full wording of the error was "That didn't work. Please try again"

The screen wasn't blinking. It would just show the background & not have anything come up.

I only have "Ubuntu Linux"

The image of the beaver tells the story, isn't he cute? :)

So you are right up-to-date with the latest. Linux is not as prone as certain other operating systems I could name to having bugs, but if there are any, they will be addressed pretty promptly by Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu.

I happened to have found a way to install the Unity Desktop on 18.4.

So does that mean you are in business, or do you require further help?

If you are able to maintain reliable logins for a few days, I or one of my colleagues and friends can have a scout around for Chromecast clues.

Cheers

As for Chromecast, I really don't remember how long it's been going on. Sometimes it works & sometimes it doesn't. Right now it works though but just not able to get to the devices> chrome://cast/#devices

Yeah, scout around for some Chromecast clues. W/ the unity login screen, I should be able to maintain a reliable login.

Just a heads up or FYI Eddie - with Bionic Beaver (actually with 17.10 Artful Aardvark), Canonical have scrapped Unity although it still receives support until end-of-life, which is 2021.

Your DE (Desktop Environment) is GNOME.

Catch you at your other thread tomorrow my time.

Cheers
