I am trying to install ubuntu with a disk. It will start to install and then the monitor goes off and I get nothing? I am new to linux and would like to get away from Windows if I can. It's not looking good for me so far. I have tried to try it before installing and it does the same thing. What am I doing wrong??

Some video cards have a problem with a "black screen" like you describe, usually with laptops, but not always. If you shine a bright flashlight at the screen you may can see the desktop so that you can do a proper shutdown.

If this is the case, when booting and you are at the GRUB screen, you can usually hit "e" to edit the boot process. In the edit screen, you add "nomodeset" (without quotes) next to "quiet splash"... or something like that. Might say nosplash, might say "ro" in there too... but this is the place to add nomodeset.

Then hit F10 to boot with the new setting and see if it works.

On my phone, so not my best description.:D

If that helps, we can make that setting permanent.

Cheers
