before you read, this is my first linux distribution.
when i try to boot into kali (from USB drive, which i used rufus to set up) i get sent straight to the grub shell. aside from that, in windows, the 128gb drive is now listed as a 5gb drive. just in case you're wondering, i moved the persistency slider all the way up to 110gb in rufus.
so, i have two questions:
1. can i fix this?
2. if i can't, is there anyway to reset the drive to its original size?

this is my first linux distribution.
before you start go to the Kali docs page and read them all.. https://www.kali.org/docs/introduction/

quote

As the distribution’s developers, you might expect us to recommend that everyone should be using Kali Linux. The fact of the matter is, however, that Kali is a Linux distribution specifically geared towards professional penetration testers and security specialists, and given its unique nature, it is NOT a recommended distribution if you’re unfamiliar with Linux or are looking for a general-purpose Linux desktop distribution for development, web design, gaming, etc.

@shiver welcome to linux.org, but

...this is my first linux distribution.

Kali is exactly the wrong first Linux distribution to use, which is why you are here.

I am not being mean-spirited, I am being honest.

Kali is based on Debian.

You should install something like Debian or MX Linux, or Ubuntu or Linux Mint and use them for a couple of years, and then you may be ready to try Kali.

I assume this is a 128 GB usb Pen-drive, in which case re-formatting the whole drive to Fats or Ex-Fats will wipe everything from the drive and that should include the partitions

Thanks!
I was also just wondering if this was normal, or if I just did something wrong.

That is quite possible, but the developers of Kali and other pentesting distributions, all expect newbies to their offering, still to be Linux experience and terminal Competent. To sort out their own problems [know where to find, download , and how to install such as WI-Fi & graphic drivers] know to disable windows -fast - boot [and other Microsoft options] and so on.

Kali is Not Kool, Kali is not magical, Kali is built to do one job and one job only,.... Penetration testing.

I would as the others here have already said you should be starting with a different Distro. Not Kali. Rufus has also been known not to work well with Linux ISOs so I usually recommend Etcher form here it's cross platform and will work on windows.
Good Luck and do choose a more beginner distro Wizard has already given you some you may want to try. Mint would be my choice for you because is stable and has a great community around it.

Alright everyone, new issue. I formatted the flash drive again, and it's still showing as 5.44 GB.

I think partition table needs to be deleted and recreated.
If you only format existing partition the partition table stays the same, which means if there are hidden partitions they'll stay hidden and wasting space.

To delete and recreate partition table you can use fdisk
