Recently I have been trying to get my Steam games working on Lutris. I have had a consistent library issue until I suspected it may be because I needed to install the proprietary video driver instead of the Nouveau drivers I have been using since installation. I wasn't sure how to do this without breaking anything, and after sudo pacman -S nvidia && sudo pacman -Rsn xf86-video-nouveau, sure enough, Steam no longer starts. I always get the same error printed to STDOUT, which strangely enough seems to have nothing to do with video drivers.

It persists even after I reinstalled the old driver at the same time as the new one (having them both installed) and restarting my machine, running mkinitcpio -P and even grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg. I am not sure how to get Steam back to working condition, or how to "properly" swap to a different video driver post-install.

This may not even be a problem related to my video drivers, but this log seems like it should be enough for an experienced person to know what the problem is. Hopefully this solves my specific problem once and for all, because I don't seem to see a specific forum thread covering this when using a search engine.

Steam is a 32bit application so you will need the 32 bit nvidia libraries, you need both the nvidia package and lib32-nvidia-utils.

Check if these packages is installed: lib32-vulkan-icd-loader and vulkan-icd-loader.

I tried to install those and yet again Pacman reports they are up to date already. I noticed in the Steam logs one line BInit - Unable to initialize Vulkan! so it may be a problem with Vulkan but there actually seems to be a ton of errors in the logs. Can't post again because I'm posting on mobile, but it's pretty similar to what I have already posted twice.

For some reason it isn't able to initialize vulkan even though you have the correct vulkan packages installed. Try and launch steam through gdb to see if you get anymore information, that's why I usually do when I have problems with steam.

First need to know what Nvidia card you have - to get the latest drivers you need to add the PPA

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa

sudo apt-get update

You can now close the terminal and open your Driver Manager or you can install them manually

That's not going to work on an Arch based distribution.

Been using Buntu based distro - hence the PPA - think for arch it would be
sudo pacman -Syyu to make sure the system is updated then
sudo pacman -S nvidia nvidia-utils nvidia-settings xorg-server-devel opencl-nvidia

What I can't remember is if you have to blacklist the nouveau drivers or not after the nvidia install. I think you do but can't remember getting old I guess

So I noticed something, looking at the Nvidia wiki article, is that the driver "nvidia" is actually not the right driver I needed to install. I actually use a custom kernel (specifically both linux-zen and linux-hardened in alternation), so in order to have the driver installed properly I needed nvidia-dkms, so I installed that. That actually got rid of the line BInit - Unable to initialize Vulkan! in the logs. I also tried installing and enabling Network Manager, something I don't use because I can access the network without it just by using IWD, but I wanted to see if installing it made any difference. I was disappointed to see that the problem has not been solved, only unraveled by a single layer. This is the logs now.

Now how do I truly uninstall Nouveau? It seems like the most logical next step here. The Arch wiki is not being clear with it either.

So funny story, this just became an Xorg issue. In an attempt to blacklist/remove Nouveau, I broke XDM which is my display manager. Now I can't do anything on my computer at all, including logging in and giving you any logs. I get something similar to this:
xdm-archlinux.service: Failed with result 'protocol'.

Edit: So I think the problem here is I need to figure out how to properly remove nouveau from my computer, as it seems that when I try to uninstall mesa, this happens:
$ sudo pacman -Rsn mesa lib32-mesa
Code:
[sudo] password for lonefox256:
checking dependencies...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: removing mesa breaks dependency 'mesa' required by gst-plugins-base-libs
:: removing mesa breaks dependency 'mesa' required by gtk3
:: removing lib32-mesa breaks dependency 'lib32-mesa' required by lib32-gtk3
:: removing lib32-mesa breaks dependency 'lib32-mesa' required by lib32-libglvnd
:: removing mesa breaks dependency 'mesa' required by libglvnd
:: removing mesa breaks dependency 'mesa' required by mpv
:: removing mesa breaks dependency 'mesa' required by qt5-base
:: removing mesa breaks dependency 'mesa' required by xorg-server-devel
I was able to uninstall xf86-video-nouveau, however, but it seems to not do anything, as when I run mkinitcpio -M, I still get
Code:
==> Modules autodetected
Now how do I truly uninstall Nouveau? It seems like the most logical next step here. The Arch wiki is not being clear with it either.
Leave mesa installed is a dependency of some other applications you have installed. Removing xf86-video-nouveau is enough because it uninstalls the nouveau driver, if you have nouveau listed under MODULES in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf remove it there and rerun mkinitcpio -P.

When your computer is on and booted press: ctrl+alt+f6, login with your user, undo your blacklist change and reboot. What kernel are you running and what nvidia card do you have?

My computer seems to be corrupted beyond repair. This thread is about getting my computer to a state where there are no missing or duplicate drivers, something that should be obvious. I don't know what you mean by "undo your blacklist change" because I am utterly confused by the situation my computer is in right now. I don't know how to get it to a state where either driver is running by itself, and Xorg not running is confusing as I don't know of any real failure information other than journalctl -xe.This problem is reaching the level of some kind of hard drive write head issue rapidly; is it time to reinstall Arch?
Also, when I look at /etc/mkinitcpio.conf the line with "MODULES" just says MODULES=(), I see that a lot, that other stuff is supposed to be there but maybe my system keeps track of those differently.
Actually I think that only applies to people who use early loading.

I am running both linux-hardened and linux-zen on my computer, Those previous logs may have been on either kernel.
I can't log in to my computer to show you any direct information until I fix XDM.

Yeah it was early where I am when I replied. Boot from the Arch installation media, then chroot into your system and fix it from there. And yes if you are running anything other than the default kernel you will need nvidia-dkms.

More information on Xorg not working (I swear we'll get back to Steam at some point.)
# xdm -error FILE

Code:
xdm error (pid XXX): server unexpectedly died
xdm error (pid XXX): Server for display :0 can't be started, session disabled
xdm info (pid XXX): Exiting
":0" is actually :0 exactly so that could be the problem. Maybe it's not configured properly.
Edit: Earlier in the file:
Code:
Fatal server error
(EE) no screens found(EE)
I am typing this as it shows on the screen so there may be typos. I removed likely irrelevant information (XXX is the process ID I.e. 868, FILE was a directory where I chose to write XDM error logs to.

What did you do to blacklist the nouveau driver since it seems all your problems started from there?

Guys I don't think that missing/conflicting drivers are the issue here. When I use lspci -v, I notice the lines on my graphics card say "Loaded driver: nvidia" and "Available drivers: nvidia, nvidia_drm, nouveau" I notice that when I undo the blacklistings at /etc/modprobe.d/*.conf, /usr/lib/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf and /usr/lib/modprobe.d/nvidia-dkms.conf, and set my xorg.conf to use "nouveau" drivers, I see lspci tells me that the Nouveau driver is being used. No errors are reported by that. So that is not the problem (I think).
What did you do to blacklist the nouveau driver since it seems all your problems started from there?
I started by adding this to /etc/modprobe.d/*.conf
Code:
blacklist nouveau
blacklist lbm-nouveau
options nouveau modeset=0
alias nouveau off
alias lbm-nouveau off
But even after deleting that file, nothing changes about the problem.
Seriously could be a hardware issue guys.
Also Nvidia actually did have a system for blacklisting Nouveau, and I can actually undo this and it doesn't make a difference.

Edit: Also when I look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Code:
...
[ 100.192] (EE) No devices detected.
[ 100.192] (EE)
Fatal server error:
[ 100.192] (EE) no screens found(EE)
[ 100.192] (EE)
Please consult the X.Org Foundation Support
         at http://wiki.x.org
for help.
[ 100.192] (EE) Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.
[ 100.192] (EE)
[ 100.255] (EE) Server terminated with error (1). Closing log file.
I'm typing this out exactly as it shows on screen so there may be typos.
