The local Walmart had these for $28 so I picked up a couple (one was even on discount because the plastic wrap had been opened).

I googled the model v/v use with openwrt and it looks like that will work.

I'm supposing they're being sold off for cheap because the (wired) ethernet ports are 100 Mbps, not gigabit. That and isn't there supposed to be some political issue with tp-link?

mods dont like anything political, but you're not wrong --> https://nmfta.org/why-is-the-u-s-considering-banning-tp-link

the reality is that walmart has a supply chain problem - most of their products are produced in china. being unable to sell cheap/knockoff electronics with known security risks reduces their market share as those customers go to amazon.

dump tp-link, ask for refund immediately lol

Turns out you're spot-on here.

Before I bought these, I used my smartphone to google the model v/v openwrt and it appeared it would be a "Go". This is why I hate trying to do anything on the web with my phone. When I got home to a PC with a full sized screen, I find that the model is -listed- at openwrt... Listed under something to the effect of "Forget it - not enough memory". If I can't use openwrt on them, they serve no purpose for me at all. :(
