Yes, I'm aware that the newsletter has broken links. I just found out and have spent the last half hour opening a detailed ticket. Hopefully it's an easy fix. We shall see!

Anyhow, the article is pretty short and easy.

Feedback is awesome.

very nice i was playing with a python script using

got that working and was fine tuning it Json etc but , that can go on hold , since yours is a one liner and is adequate for my purposes

It's a pretty quick and easy way to check.

A while ago, probably a few years, I had it set to automatically fetch the weather and store it - among other tasks daily. I think that may have been with a different site, but that wasn't in my notes.

Wow the output is awesome.

Don't forget 'curl wttr.in/:help' to see the stuff you can do with it.

Thanks for the tip KGill, You can also get a quick snapshot of the current weather conditions with this command inxi -w
inxi -w
Weather:
Temperature: 22.1 C (72 F) Conditions: Scattered Clouds
Current Time: Fri 30 Jul 2021 03:59:48 PM EDT (America/New_York)

Good stuff @KGIII

As for feedback. Adding in how to set weather up as an alias in your profile or possibly creating a script called weather that executes the curl command with the proper location would be good also.

An article about aliases is already going to be written. It is on my list.

I'm sitting in the car while the wife is in buying hair products. This site is not all that great on mobile.

Dat ASCII art, I friggin' love that ASCII art!!! I'd check the weather just for that.

I was using it periodically before, but now I've gotten into the habit of using it more frequently. There is some kind of data being collected, so it's not perfect, but its still an efficient way of checking the weather.

Gotta love ASCII art.

And, the only data it could realistically collect is your IP address and that address' usage history. There aren't any sites online that don't have access to that data, unless you take steps to at least appear elsewhere. It'll do (perhaps, I'd have to look again) geolocation based on your IP address, but it's otherwise just a CURL.

My IP is dynamic, so IDC it collecting that. By now my address has been linked to anything from Netflix to Pornhub to a Catholic church site... I think I may add this to my conky!

I'm one of those folks that doesn't much care if my info is collected, though they suck at showing me ads for things I actually want (when I'm not blocking ads).

I'm totes paranoid. I use different users and browsers for different things. My paranoia is partly personality disorder, part philosophical crap. But, yeah, you're right about the adds, their adds are a joke. If I visit a site that I have an account with and have only ordered tools or PC parts, I still get adds for women's clothing and bed sets. So even the profile they do have on me is about as accurate as a wild shot in the dark. The only accurate thing I ever got was being advertised a laptop I'd looked at on one shopping app when I opened another. But, that's friggin' Android (Googledroid). Needless to say: uninstalled both and returned to DDG browser.

The truth is, none of us are all that interesting. And, if we were, using different browsers and VPNs ain't gonna help us any. Not even TOR is safe once you leave the .onion domains - and the .onion domains are only as private as you make them.

That said, for a little while Google was trying to sell me cowboy boots and barn doors. Frankly, that's about as close as they ever come.

That does look interesting, @craigevil. Hmm... It may even be interesting enough for another article.

@KGIII While you are on this topic, if you could write an article on how to change the weather from the terminal that would be great! ;)

how to change the weather from the terminal

Hmm... In my country (mostly), we have a group of mentally ill/mentally handicapped people who are convinced they're neither of those things. They're also convinced that any major weather event was intentional and caused by HARP or some unknown technology in 'deep underground military bases' (DUMB).

I have run out of sympathy for them. It bothers me that mental health care is not as available as it could be in my country, but I'm still out of sympathy for them.

Hm I haven't seen any mention of HARP for a couple of yrs even on Gab and Parler.
