I have tried to upgrade from Mint 18.3 to 19 and failed. The instructions necessitate more or less constant use of the Terminal.

I decided to try again but the Terminal will not open up.

Any ideas will be appreciated.

Hi George and welcome to linux.org :)

I wonder if you can tell us a bit more about your environment, for example
  • Computer brand and model number
  • Are you running Mint alongside Windows (if so, which Windows) or is it the only OS on your system?
  • Hard drive size and RAM (memory)
  • In Mint, do you run a Home folder or do you have a separate Home partition?
etcetera.

What I am thinking is whether it may be simplest to perform a full, clean install of 'Tara' over your 'Sylvia', and if so, whether you need to safeguard personal data &c.

Is the rest of your current install running OK, can you access Terminal via Ctrl-Alt-t ?

You get the picture. See what you can come back with and I or others will do our best to help.

Cheers

G'day George,

Did you establish a system snapshot using Timeshift, ....before you started the upgrade procedure ?

Could you explain please?
