When allowing updates I saw I had the ability to upgrade to Ubuntu pro. So I did. Well it all seemed fine but now I can't gain access to my email, Thunderbird.
========================
(the top of the box header) - https://localhost/?code=0.ac.e1.BvS1ce

(in the box)

Unable to connect

An error occurred during a connection to localhost.

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer’s network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Thunderbird is permitted to access the web.

===================================
I have Nord VPN.
I've disconnected and made sure killswitch is off. No change.
On my Windows machine it lists both Thunderbird and Firefox as vulnerable programs but leaves them alone.
I believe this all started after the Pro upgrade.

My question is should I disable the pro upgrade? It is a switch I would throw. What if any repercussions I might face if I do?
I'm just trying to get my email service back in order.

One other thing in the "upgrade" it threw a warning about Livepatch not compatible with the current Kernel.
It recommended I disable it which I did. It also suggested I visit a site to see what compatible kernels I could download and install.
Until I understand it better I'm not wanting to play with the Kernel. No matter how good his chicken tastes.
This is all feeling like a rabbit hole to me.

Thanks in advance.

So then I just saw this header.

Ubuntu Security Update USN-6983-1: FFmpeg vulnerability

Now I'm really confused.

FFMpeg should not affect Thunderbird

The FFMpeg problem can be corrected by updating your system to the following package versions:
Ubuntu 24.04 ffmpeg 7:6.1.1-3ubuntu5+esm2 Available with Ubuntu Pro
see here - https://ubuntu.com/security/notices/USN-6983-1

as far as Thunderbird goes I would check you email settings - Edit > Account Settings

G'day finallyIgotLinuxed, Welcome to Linux.org

ffmpeg will probably have zero to do with your current predicament

Why ubuntu chose now to give you this bit of grief>,,,no idea.....ubuntu does that sort of thing from time to time.....just to keep you on your toes.

Really all Ubuntu pro is....is a bunch of ongoing security updates which extends its 'secure' life from 4 or 5 years to 8, 9 or 10....something of that nature.
In the normal course of events the demise of Thunderbird and the uptick to pro should not be connected.

"unable to connected"" will usually point to a connection problem....internet etc

Have you rebooted ?

Does the same router etc feed this pc as feeds your other pc ?

Have you made the acquaintance of Timeshift yet ?.....because you are new and 'prone" to having a dabble it could very easily become your new best friend.
In a nutshell.....Timeshift (after you have set it up properly((easy to do...not difficult))....will save 'snapshots of your system files to an external drive.....either daily, weekly, monthly...as many or as few as you think you need.
Example...I use Linux Mint 21.3....I have 5 snapshots saved....which go back to around the 26th of August....so if I screw up or things go south for whatever reason....I simply restore to one of the dates and all is good.

I hear you asking...."does it work?...consistently?....Yes, it does. Otherwise, I would not bother with it

The snapshots are saved to an external drive, ...it is formatted to ext4....it can be accessed directly from your pc....or if things really get screwed up and the pc cannot be booted from it can be accessed from a usb stick with your OS on it.\

I am rambling.....i will get back on topic.

Tell us what else happened....when you say "when allowing updates".....does this mean you are choosing which updates to install and which ones not to install ?

Reboot and then talk to us again

Thanks to all for the reply.
Timeshift, I'll get.
I do realize my Thunderbird issue and the "Pro" thing maybe unrelated.
Though the timing....
I have downloaded, but not installed yet is Ubuntu 24.04.1.
Nervous.
I'll put in the Timeshift before running the upgrade.
GatorsFan: I've rebooted, shutdown, backflips. I'll call my email service to see if they know.
It all runs fine on my Windows laptop,(Why shouldn't it???)
But I'm refusing to keep going back to it to do these things. Through my Ubuntu machine I can still log into
Xfinity's website and Proton to see mail.
