In the early days of Linux, 30-odd years ago, if you wanted to "join the club" and be accepted (and taken seriously) by the "elite", the "inner circle", you were expected to install and set-up your own server, along with creating & maintaining your own web-site.

This "proved" to "the gang" that you were serious about this new operating system.....and you weren't just there to waste their time.

Of course, in those early days of the world-wide web, there wasn't all the nasty crap out there, determined to siphon every last little bit of personal information out of you.....or hold your data to ransom. The web was a peaceful, relatively innocent place (for a while, anyway).

As you say, it's a VERY different kettle of fish nowadays.....
