Hey there folks,

We're going to be doing a server and site software upgrade tonight around 7pm EST. It may take a couple of hours and the site will be unavailable during that time.

Since we're switching to a different server, I'm imagining there will be a few things that I have set up on the current server during the years that I'll forget to transfer over right away, but I've also been trying to track down everything over the last week or so - so hopefully it'll go pretty smoothly :)

Is the forums software going to be upgraded or is the server's os version going to be upgraded, if the latter to which versin of which distribution are we going?

Both..
I'm setting up a new server running Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (replacing the current 20.04 server which replaced our older CentOS server when they went to 'stream' updates). Core services will be the same.. nginx, mariadb.

There will be a dns update, but you shouldn't notice because both servers will be in 'maintenance' mode during the upgrade and I have a short TTL set up anyway.

Thank you for advising.

Cool! Btw, nothing wrong with CentOS Stream, I run it on my personal home lan vm's on top of Proxmox and on my rented vpses where I host my mail setup on.

haha oh, I know ... they just p*ssed me off with that change :) I was a diehard rhel/centos server guy up until then.

You could have gone for Rocky Linux then? ;) Only difference is with CentOS Stream it's support as long as the active lifecylce of a major RHEL version, which doesn't get many updates once it hits maintance. Do you disable/remove snaps for the Ubuntu server installation?

I'd have considered Alma or Rocky, probably... But, I haven't any complaints about Ubuntu. In fact, I quite like them. (I too used to use CentOS on my servers.)

I was headed down that road, but then figured one of them would likely prevail as the 'leader' and I would have chosen the other one that would then eventually get dropped.

I don't see either of them going away as they have both gone their own way of doing things. I ran Rocky Linux for a while but decided I would give CentOS Stream a fair chance by trying it out for myself so I can make a decision based on my own experiences instead of on the opinions of other people on the internet which aren't always opinions based on technical experiences but more on how they react to certain decisions made by certain people or companies :)

Are you using a VPS? If yes what hoster and why?

Yeah, I've been using DigitalOcean for a little over 10yrs. I'm pretty happy with them. I have my VMs on there, they just leave me alone and let me build/break/fix things :) I've only really needed their help a couple times and they were great each time.

Thanks not my first choice but understandable

DigitalOcean is pretty solid. Their 'droplets' are reasonably priced and their uptime is pretty solid - with good throughput.

Anyhow, it's nearing that time...

28 minutes by my clock.

I am a big fan of https://contabo.com/ I am nearly since day one their customer. Never had a problem, quick support and very much bang for the buck

So far so good.

I'm digging the dark theme, though some of the contrasts will take some time to get used to.
