Hello!

I'm a big geek that gets excited thinking about reducing the idle power draw of my home server.
It currently draws 18-19w from the wall in an idle state - yuck!

The TLDR is that I would like to know if I can reduce powerdraw by disabling USB and PCIe ports from within the OS which is ubuntu servert LTS.

I couldn't find an UEFI option to disable ports, so I don't think that MSI provides it : /

Here is an overview of what im packing
  • OS
    • Ubuntu server
  • Hardware
    • i5-8400
    • 16 GB ddr4 ram
    • 500gb m2 ssd
    • Msi z370-A PRO Motherboard
Thanks for your attention!

On my MSI mobo some power setting (CPU related) are located in overclocking section, so you might want to look there.

Regarding USB's and PCIe ports I think these draw power only if something is attached to them?

Buy an ARM system if you care about reducing power.
