good evening dear friends, :)

first of all: i am not sure if this sub-forum is the approiate one - if the web-server-forum is the right one. I am believing this.
Perhaps it would fit also to the so called "off-topic" forum. Plz set me straight - if i am in the wrong forum. I am a big big fan of your forum.

I am using WordPress on my server which only uses SFTP using an SSH key.

btw: The backend is managed by my friend - and i work on the frontend.

if i try to install and upgrade plugins, it appears that i am required to enter a FTP login to install the plugins.
question: Is there a way to install and upgrade plugins by manually uploading the files instead of having WordPress handle the entire process?

I did some more research and got aware that: WordPress will only prompts me for the FTP connection information, while trying to install plugins or a WordPress update. well i wonder why: it seems that it cannot write to /wp-content directly. At least it seems to be the point. I guess that this is the cause of the issue.
Otherwise i guess that the web server would have write access to the necessary files, it will take care of the updates and installation automatically. This method does not require me to have FTP/SFTP or (even more) SSH access, but it does require me to have specific file permissions set up on your webserver.

the question is: how to do that: how to tell the Web-Server this - and how to set the specific file permissions set up on the webserver?

Which mehthods can be used here!?

look forward to hear from you

cheers:)

Yup. It's obvious once you know.

Look at "Add Plugins". Look at the very top. Yup. It's right there. That's the same as:

You can also upload them to the appropriate directory via SFTP/FTP and then install them.

If you have access to the server wp-cli is also a useful too.
