My computer will no longer boot. I think it is the MBR causing the problem. Is it possible to boot from a Linux disk to repair the MBR. tks

Well it depends... Did you have linux on it before it stopped booting? If it's a Windows only PC then no linux won't help. Use your Windows DVD.

try to repair using Hiren's boot CD....
I recommended to backup your Hard disk using Linux Live CD and then switch to the linux or windows again after installation...
