Hello,

After trying Ubuntu on my PC I now want to install Windiws 11.

I have moved Ubuntu to my laptop

I have a new disc.

I have removed the Ubuntu HHD and installed a SSD which I have formatted completely.

My PC won't boot at all.

I swapped the drives again and it boots properly.

But when I remove the Ubuntu drive and insert the formatted SSD nothing happens.

I think MB fixed on Ubuntu and won't read anything else.

I am running a ROG Crosshair V1 Extreme motherboard

What am I doing wrong?

Any suggestions

Thanks
AJ

Do you have a windows 11 USB stick? and a license key for it?

Hi @Baffled your PC and new SSD are totally fine, it's just that it doesn't have any operating system installed. There's nothing to expect from the MB, it can't read anything from an empty disk.

That's why @dos2unix is asking you if you have a Windows 11 USB Stick and a License.

There's a very high chance that the machine came with a license embedded in its firmware, so focus on the Windows 11 stick -- follow these instructions: Download Windows 11

NOTE -- the best way for you is to do this process in another windows computer of a family member or a friend, selecting the option in the middle, that would use the Media Creation Tool

As my erstwhile friends have said, your machine is fine but doesn't have an operating system,
Now you can download from Microsoft the original windows the machine had. Using Linux burn a bootable ISO of your windows and install it in the normal way. For later versions of win 8, win 10 and win 11 you do not need a licence number if your machine had windows before. When you install it it will automatically check for your machine's licence on their server?

You may need to clear the bios and reset the bios to the default settings as that computer was tied to a different hard drive.

I could be wrong although I'm sure Windows 11 uses UEFI/EFI Secure boot.

It's worth a try imo.

Maybe consider another distro, there are many out there that are better than ubuntu.
Don't know which desktop you used but equally there are always better ones.

Windows 11 is not really Windows compared to what previous Windowses used to be and no future Windows will restore previous glory.

Hi All,
Thank you for all your input!
None of it was very helpful as some didn't understand the problem and others had nothing to do with the problem at all.
I will try elsewhere.
Thank you anyway
Cheers

@Baffled - in #1, you may not have described well enough what your background with the two operating systems is/was.

1. Did you actually have an installed version of Windows 11 running on your rig before you tried Ubuntu?
2. Are you seeking to dual boot? That is, have both Windows 11 and Ubuntu available to choose from at startup?
