Recommendation for Linux Dist. for scripting ed.

Looking for a Linux dist to allow scripting ed /sandbox. Downloaded Ubuntu to create a bootable USB for my Windows 8 PC. Just looking for advice if this is the better option or another would give me what I need.

Scripting ed?

Ubuntu is good for most things. Easy to use, full GUI, etc. Very nice.
