I have Ubuntu Cinnamon installed on a Dell desktop and an Acer laptop.
Both installations went very well and updates were applied.
However, when I boot either of the two systems, they often do not finish the boot process.
I worked on the problem for a while, then re-installed Ubuntu.
But the problem persists.

First: the Ubuntu Cinnamon screen comes up with a small rotating circle. - Normal
Several seconds later, the screen goes black and then the Ubuntu Cinnamon screen returns with the rotating circle for several seconds, and then goes to the logon screen.
Or, during the second time that the circle rotates, it rotates forever.
I have to force the system to power down using the power button.

When I turn it back on, it will do the same thing, and I power it down, again.
The next time I turn it on, the Ubuntu Cinnamon screen comes on, the circle rotates, then goes to a blank screen.
At that time, I hold down the Esc button, and continue to hold it down.
The screen fills with rows of texts.
I continue to hold down the Esc button until the screen goes blank, then I let it go.
Almost every time, the logon screen appears.

This appears to be a random event, but it happens about half of the time.
I have installed all updates with no problem, but the problem persists.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sounds like a possible problem with the screen power management, try running with the power saving options for the screen OFF.

I went to Power Management.

Power options:
Turn off screen when inactive for > 30 minutes > I changed it to "Never"
Suspend when inactive for > Never (did not change it)

Extra options: When power button is pressed > Suspend > I changed it to "Do nothing"

Reboot twice, but it still would not boot past the second screen with the spinning circle.
Rebooted again and held down the Esc key until the logon screen appeared.
Logged in with no problem.

Hi. I have exactly the same problem on 3 of my 4 computers running Ubuntu. The 3 computers that have this issue are laptops (Asus, Apple and Lenovo) and are all running Ubuntucinnamon. The only unaffected Ubuntu PC is my custom built desktop running Kubuntu. But I originally installed ubuntucinnamon on it and it also had the same issue at the time.

Thanks for the reply. When I boot up a system, now, I hold down the ESC key and it goes through the steps until it gets to the login. Many times I don't do this just to see if it could have been fixed by an update.

According to th date of the first post, this started pre March 24th 2025

Thats a fair time to wait for an update.

Is this common?...shared by many?...or just restricted to a few ?
