This is just a casual question. I'm not needing to use it for anything, but I am wondering. While perusing a thread in another forum I came across someone talking about installing a .deb package using gdebi. Having never heard of it, I started looking for it on my Mint 22 system.
According to software manager, it's installed, apparently by default as I never installed it. However, it does not show up anywhere in the applications menu. And trying to invoke it from terminal just generates an error message.
Soooo, I fired up my VirtualBox Ubuntu machine. Gdebi was not installed, but available in the App center. I installed it, and lo and behold, it opens just fine.
Why would the powers that be, package gdebi with Mint Cinnamon when, apparently, it doesn't work and play with Mint?
Again, it's just a casual question, but it does make me wonder.

For whatever reason, the devs decided to not place a link in the application menu. Software doesn't require a link to be installed or functional. It's a fine application.

In Mint all you have to do to run gdebi is right click on a .deb package and select open with gdebi. Follow the instructions and the package will be installed. Have use it many time it works well.

what you do is right click on the .deb file and select Open with Gdebi

Ahh, ok. So it's there and it works. But in Mint, there is no gui. From what I've read, gdebi-gtk is part of the package, but apparently not included in the version shipped with Mint as it is included in the Ubuntu install.
So it's one of those programs that one "just knows is there"? I wonder how many other hidden gems are installed for me to discover as my Linux journey continue! ;)

Gems abound :) ! One can discover all the packages on the system with a command such as the following in a terminal which creates a file that can then be inspected:
Code:
apt list --installed > installedFiles.txt

Alternatively, running the synaptic GUI program, one can navigate within that to see all the installed packages, as well as those available.

In my memory gdebi is no longer installed by default with Ubuntu. But it's a neat little program.
