For anyone who has Balena Etcher installed via ppa...the Balena people are transitioning from Binray to Cloudsmith, and as such the old PPA will not work anymore.

When your Update Manager runs (either manually or as scheduled) it will present an error similar to below...

Never fear....the solution is here !

Running Balena via a ppa means that the balena etcher package is kept up to date via your Update Manager.

For those running a Debian related OS....(Ubuntu, Linux mint etc)
Debian package

add new PPA:

curl -1sLf \
'https://dl.cloudsmith.io/public/balena/etcher/setup.deb.sh' \
| sudo -E bash

install etcher:

sudo apt install -y balena-etcher-electron

For those running an ARM OS (Arch Linux etc etc)
rpm package

add new PPA:

curl -1sLf \
'https://dl.cloudsmith.io/public/balena/etcher/setup.rpm.sh' \
| sudo -E bash

install etcher:

sudo yum install -y balena-etcher-electron

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For anyone unfamiliar with the Terminal, simply Copy all of this...

curl -1sLf \
'https://dl.cloudsmith.io/public/balena/etcher/setup.deb.sh' \
| sudo -E bash

....and paste it (ctrl shift V) into the Terminal.......hit enter....type in your password......and it will do its thing

When that finishes,....copy and paste in...: sudo apt install -y balena-etcher-electron
Allow it to do its thing also.

Thats it....you are done.

I do too, but different strokes for different folks :)

The Etcher download site (appimage) has this

Updating Etcher

If you would like to update to a new version, simply download the new Etcher AppImage.
So it depends on whether you want the updates brought to you, or go and fetch them.

I went to : https://balenaetcher.eu/ (official site??!!)
and was eventually told that balena had broken someone's terms of service....: this download is no longer available
https://mega.nz/file/u882wTyS#_tFfr717UJAmC-eFTCMYIy6KbW5T1wdluAR9TL3uyKc

This site: https://etcher.download/ ...continued on to what appeared to be an app image for balena and is hopefully free of crap.

,....and from : https://www.balena.io/etcher/ ......the download is a zip file (app image) for 64 bit. The 32 bit also offers an app image.

Messy.

I will have the updates bought to me.

I trust github (https://github.com/balena-io/etcher/issues/3501)

Ta.

I use the AppImage

Yep I use the AppImage and turn off any auto updates and anonymous reports.

Regardless of what user's think user data / user information is being collected it's the way of today's world.

That's the official site, so far as I know. (Also note the GitHub URL.)

I too grab mine straight from GitHub. I too trust them more than I trust other sites.

Only reason to upgrade to a newer version of balena etcher would only be for security reasons.

If ya got a good working secure version of balena etcher than no reason to upgrade to a newer version because newer versions can sometimes be problematic.

Newest ain't always the best from my experience.

Other than when it was installed with a repository, I don't recall ever updating it. It works. It's not connected to the 'net. So, I don't think I've ever upgraded to new versions except in the above cases or when I happened to download a newer version because it was on a new system/new OS install.

I don't know if balena-etcher updates but I disable these settings.

"Anonymously report errors and usage statistics to balena.io".

"Auto-updates enable".

I think I installed (on this computer) with a .deb file - but it's not a PPA (or at least it's not in my repositories).

These are my settings:

Etcher_114.png

There's nothing about Etcher or Balena in my sources.

I also don't think I've ever once looked in the settings menu, until today. It's one of those apps that just works.

Notice that I said I think that's how I installed it. I actually have no idea how I installed it.

Just downloaded and installed balena etcher from Linux Lite 5.4 repository.

I wonder if balena etcher from the distro's repository is an oem version which may or may not get updated through distro update manager.

I've seen very few distro's that even offered balena etcher as available software and most of the time used the AppImage.

I guess some user's gotta have the latest versions of software.

Seems I'm always reading on forums where some user's complain about some Linux software isn't the latest released version.

I'll stay with what's available in the Linux repository or what's available from the software manufactures website.

As long as the software does what I need to do I'm good with an older version.

Hell what do I know I'm using a 2006 desktop with a mechanical hard drive. :p
