I have been given a Dell Inspiron 8000. Currently has Windows Me installed.

It is to be given to a charity and the users will be non-technical but will use it for web, email and office applications.

It does not have WiFi but I would like to add a simple USB WiFi adaptor that will just work.

The specification is:

CPU FAMILY: Pentium III
PROCESSOR SPEED: 800 MHz
SYSTEM RAM: 128 MB
HARD DRIVE: 80 GB (total)

I would like to install a Linux distro that will run reasonably and update itself safely. Distro needs to be installed on the hard disk rather than boot from CD or USB (which will get lost or damaged).

What do you suggest?

Suggest upping RAM to at least 512MB if possible and try PCLOS LXDE Edition, for starts

EDIT: I you want to try the ancient laptop as-is, don't try ubuntu. Instead, use something designed for such 'dinosaurs' like Absolute linux. It's Slackware-based. There's a post somewhere in this forum on the developer of Absolute and his distro. Independence is becoming a scarce commodity in the Linux realm. If you like it, send the dev a sawbuck-- he could use it -- but your choice.

Hope this helps!
