My new computer came installed with Linux and Mint 21.1. The original installed password "ABCD" was altered (unknown) before I could change to my password. What to do?

Welcome to the forums
which password, root or user?

and....are they definitely upper case or perhaps lower case ?....Yes...it does make a difference.

Is caps lock on ?

Recovery method for password:

1. Restart computer
2. At grub menu press e
3. Navigate to linux kernel line
4. Add, after a space: init=/bin/sh rw
5. Press to boot: cntl+x
6. Run: /sbin/passwd <user>
7. Run: mount -o remount,ro /
8. Run: sync
9. Run: /sbin/reboot -f

At step 6, other things can also be done.
This process is linux essentials.

I own a new computer with Linux and Mint 21.1 installed. No prior experience. The password installed was "abcd" lower case, it is now 6 characters long. How changed? unknown. I need to get a workable password. I have now decided to buy another Dell computer with Linux and Mint 21.1 installed and password and userid included. The first thing I'll do is change the password and userid and not take the chance that the password will change while I'm working on the "First 10 things to do when you have Mint 21.1 installed". Then, I can continue to learn Linux and Mint 21.1 as time permits. I knew how to "Restart computer" but got stuck on the second line. Bob
