Hi,

I have an older laptop (HP 2000 Notebook, which originally had Win 8 installed). In 2018 I installed Mint as I wanted to learn Linux. Well life sometimes has other plans so I got away from that and now I'm trying to get back into it.

Bottom line is I cannot recall my password. Back then I create an Admin account & local account and can't recall either password.

QUESTIONS:

1. Is there a way to recover the passwords?

2. If there is no way to recover the passwords and because this Mint version is 6 years old, how might I wipe the drive and install the latest version of Mint?

Thank you for your assistance.

Larry

Your mint will be out of date, Assuming you do not have anything you desperately need to keep, the best [and probably quickest] would be to download and install a new distribution mint 22 or Mint LMDE or any other you fancy

G'day websurferls, Welcome to Linux.org

"wipe the drive and install the latest version of Mint? "...All things considered that is the best way forward for you

You will need: a usb stick,,,,preferably around 8GB....bigger is ok. It does not need to be empty, ....just be aware that it will be wiped when you add Mint to it via balena etcher or similar

There is no need to wipe the drive......the installer will take care of that for you when you install the latest mint.

Download Linux Mint

What type etc of pc will you be downloading on ?....does it only have windows on it?

If so, use Balena Etcher or Rufus to "burn" the downloaded mint file to the usb stick....it makes the usb stick bootable

Plug the usb stick into the HP notebook and ( i am not certain of which key) tickle the F2 key to bring up the short boot menu....select the usb stisk to boot from.....and you should end up with a "Live" version of Linux Mint on the desktop there

It is a good idea to play around with that version to be sure that internet works as well as sound etc

When you are ready to install, double click 'Install Linux Mint" ....it is an icon on the desktop

You will be asked how you wish to install....alongside what is laready on there, or as a dual install with windows etc etc....

Choose to wipe the drive and install Linux Mint only.....consuming the entire disk/drive

When asked if you wish to install codecs etc etc, tick Yes

Sit back and watch. The installer will format the drive, it will partition the drive and it will install Linux Mint

You are sure to have a load of questions.....Go for it.

If this were my machine I'd download the newest version of Linux Mint or LMDE6 and perform a fresh installation.

Don't forget to check the integrity of the .iso file before you go through the installation.:)

I'll jump on the bandwagon and chime in.

I agree with the others. Unless you really need to, just install the newest version of Mint. It'll save you time and effort. You'll end up with a system that's still supported without much effort.

Installing Linux, especially Linux Mint, is a trivial affair 99% of the time.

Who needs headaches over a holiday weekend;-

I've installed Mint several times over the last 3 years and it only took about 15 minutes.
Complete success every time!- :)

Thank you CondoBloke. I'm installing Mint right now.

Hi All,

I first installed Mint Cinnamon but found my system was laggy with it, so I just installed Zorin & will see how that goes.

Again, thank you all for your help.
