I'm a new user trying to boot to Linux Mint. I used the universal installer to setup a Toshiba flash drive to boot from.

I booted into cinnamon and the trackpad didn't work. I was able to move around the desktop briefly with arrow keys before the system crashed as took me back to the black screen you boot from. I'm only following very basic advice and am not sure how to continue.

If at first you don't succeed; try, try again.

By that I mean try a different distro. Also, make sure to verify your downloaded ISO. The vast majority of times, the downloaded .iso is fine but sometimes packets get lost or whatever and it can insert strange bugs or just plain break stuff. So, verify your download. Downloading by torrent/magnet automatically verifies the download - if that is easier for you.

So, try a different distro or make sure your download is valid.

(I'm going through a few of the unanswered posts.)

Edit: I forgot to mention, you can try changing boot parameters, such as disabling ACPI.
